tbf to ponting, isn't the ipl contract for 3 years? He's obligated to play in the ipl for 1 more year i'd think.

Re: Ponting announces retirement from international Twenty20
I think people have to come to terms with the fact that the IPL is here to stay and players will be taking part in it long after their international careers are over. International cricketers may be well paid by most people's standards but nowhere near what the top stars in other sports earn, it's a relatively short career so if offered an opportunity to earn vast sums of money for a couple of months a year are they really going to turn it down?
Giving up T20 internationals doesn't seem like reducing a player's workload very much though it has to be said. Apart from the WT20 (is that an annual event now?) teams only play a handful of them a year. Giving up ODIs as well would be a more significant step, but I guess he wants to stick around to defend the World Cup before retiring from that format.

Dude, thats the most unfair thing to say because a lot of the time the awareness of Govt. jobs and armed forces is very low. People don't suddenly find out about the armed forces beyond CA, or IAS or something like that all on their own as kids. In our society, a child is brought up and directed to a whole range confusing but safe and 'better' career options like being a doctor, CA, IAS etc. Hell till Sachin tendulkar came along even pursuing a career as a sportsperson was considered unsafe and taboo and not encouraged. It's not possible for a teenager entering college to think of alternatives like the armed forces without the right information and encouragement. When I was a teenager, the Govt. was not aggressively advertising a career in armed forces either. By the time a person here learns about the other options it is too late to change tracks due to age or age caused physical limitations. I would really love to join the army at the moment but age and it's limitations have caught up with me. The other Govt. job selections are saddled with corruption in selection procedures, ridiculous quotas and reservations and what not. So speak for your self. If the situation demands it, I will not hesitate to give my life for my country. You who don't even believe in a country called India beyond Mumbai, can you say the same?
I think Govt should make 2 year service for armed forces and rural jobs compulsary for all students. If my child tomorrow seeks a career in armed forces I will not prevent that choice at all.
I make up with social service and teaching poor kids in my locality under a local temple's initiative [over weekends] when time permits me. Do you?

The details of careers in there are hard to come by. This is the reason why a majority of the conservative middle class end up missing the bus. Their career options are restricted by the families and there is also lack of sufficient information. But thats all in the past. Today thanks to media and internet, youngsters are aware of all that goes around and are better informed of choices. That was not the case a decade back. I for instance had a very bad experience with reservations, Seeking admission in a specialized Govt. college that offered only 100 seats after school, I lost out to a seat to one of those mindless undeserving reservation categories for 'affirmative action' despite scoring more marks in the entrance test and interview and had to wait one year and work double harder to improve both the performance and grades at an entrance exam again next year. Things with Govt. education, services and like is also full of political and reservation crap that discourages merit inclined people to consider it...

dude, the armed forces employ almost a million men and women. the government more than that. then there is the police, bsf, etc. how do you think they found out? if you expect an army general to come to your house and beg you to take the exam then you're likely to be dissapointed
sorry, just sounds like an excuse

I made a choice my family made for me like millions of youngsters in middle class India does. So sue me.
If millions of men and women were so informed our armed forces wouldn't be facing such a shortage of officers and soldiers and the majority of the soldiers we have wouldn't be coming from families of desparate poor people from villages or soldiers families. Like I said, we need to have a 2 year compulsary stint in army and rural service to break the shackles and bring about a change in the mindset of the people. We live in a fast paced information age now. Things weren't so sometime back.
Serving your country doesn't mean being a Govt servant or being a soldier necessarily. A doctor can do more good by serving poor patients on the side instead of single mindedly chasing money in 5 star hospitals for example. Sometimes working for the poor on your own and doing something from within the society also counts. One does not need to be a soldier to die for your country as well. At least I do give something back to the society through social service. Do you?
If you need a more detailed debate on this, PM me. Lets keep Ponting's thread away from this.

Fark me. Boring us to death with endless plastic cricket isn't enough for the subis, now they have to bore us even more by raving on about anything but cricket in a cricket thread.

Can someone apply a small thermonuclear warhead to this thread please? I started it with the best intentions, but regret where it wound up.

Re: Ponting announces retirement from international Twenty20
Ponting is a QUNT and a whinging sook.
BUT despite that, I don't feel able to decry someone taking the opportunity to earn lots of money if it is available, particularly when they are approaching the latter part of their career. I mean it's not like he is being payed millions in bonuses both before and after being so crap at his job and greedy that he wrecked the world economy.
He has actually been rather good at his chosen trade for very many years and I feel that many have earned the right to make their money in that way. It's a shame the IPL is such a disgusting organisation, but that is for the ICC to deal with.
