Re: Films you've watched recently.
Moon.
Haven't checked to see if anyone else in this thread has mentioned it yet, but I saw it the other day: really good, old-school sci-fi movie - before CGI alien insects and exploding heads took over the genre and turned it into the kind of dumbed down dipshittery that American jocks lap up with a spoon, as they're not allowed pointy objects.
Engrossing, touching, and all in all a cut above what normally passes for entertainment of late.
Not ground-breakingly original or unpredictable, but still extremely well conceived, shot and, particularly, acted.
Check it out.

Ha. You're not alone.
'The Sound of Music' is one of my best mate's favourite movies. We've been giving him hell about it for years.
Mind you, I'm quite partial to the musical so I can't talk too much.

How do you know Braddles isn't your mate? Surely there aren't too many straight males who list TSoM as their favoutire movie.

To be fair I hate 'Beaches' and Apocalypse Now is a close second.

Apocalypse Now was just a musical with helicopters

Best of both worlds, plus some great one liners. Coppola's wife's doco of the shooting is just as manic.

I thought A N was great although i think the original cut was better than the 'Redux' version.

The use of the Doors' The End in Apocalypse Now is pretty damned good. In fact, the surreal nature of much of the movie is very impressive.

Took mini Mick to see Astro Boy last weekend. He's 10.
His verdict: "pretty good for a cartoon that was invented when you were little dad"

Martin Sheen having a heart attack on screen and Dennis Hopper stoned out of his brain were also high points in American cinema. They just don't make film stars like that anymore.

Um, one might suspect ulterior motives in Mick picking this movie.

He just laughed
Productions standards of the stuff made in the 60's would make it hilarious for the kid.

Don't think there is much of the 1960 stuff left. BBC lost/trashed a lot of it.

I enjoyed 'An Education' though I doubt most here would. I have a weakness for British films.

No, it just struck me as something that would appeal to chicks more.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
I watched Oliver Stone's "W." last night.
It was enjoyable enough without having the epic grandeur of his other political films ("Nixon" and "JFK"). The performance by Josh Brolin was good, but the film seemed a little lightweight considering the potential that was there.
For some unknown reason I also watched it with Stone's commentary. Stone is interesting to listen to, but there were times he had me wanting to throw things at the TV such was the extent of my disagreement with him - that's just the nature of politics I suppose.
