Anyone who has actually seen it will know that it is nothing like an action film. At all.

In my film studenty days a big chunk of my coursework was an in-depth analysis of Blade Runner, from a filmic point of view and also delving into the back story of a troubled production. And to top it off, a shot-by-shot analysis of the opening sequence.
I was all Blade Runner'd out by the end of it. Great film, but ruined for me by, well, me. I should've chosen a film I didn't really like.
I hadn't been able to watch it since - but it was on TV (the final director's cut) no so long ago and I PVR'd it. Enough time had passed - I was able to enjoy it again.
You can all sleep soundly in that knowledge.

Chinatown is the beans. And the toast.
A true classic of the genre.
You wouldn't ask Polanski to babysit for you, but he can make a movie.

Yeah, I was like that with midget porn.
First off it was straight up midgets. Then it was all 'midgets with strap-ons', then it was all 'midgets with strap-ons and glaring intent', then 'midgets with strap-ons and glaring intent masturbating with salmon', strap-ons and glaring intent masturbating with salmon whilst barking like a seal' and so forth until I ended with my big toe on the desk stopping me just dangling there and hence saving my life when the choke-wank went wrong.

Heh, I didn't know it was Polanski. I'm dim like that. No wonder there was some ahem, dodgy stuff in there. A subject dear to his heart.

If I had my time over again, that's what my film coursework would've been based on.
We were a right on, progressive college. Colin Firth went there. I'm sure they'd have been fine with it.
Re: Films you've watched recently.
Trev, can't you just say "Oh, nothing, just a midget porn choke-wank"?
Dello, I'm sure they'd have relished the equal opportunities - especially if the midget was black.

Lowering the tone of this thread a little from the previous conversations, any of you qunts watched 'Tinker, Tailor,...'?
Love Carre's early to mid period novels (save the last 4-5 I guess), so can't wait.

Meanwhile, This Is Spinal Tap has been voted as best ever comedy film.
The Top Ten
Thats a big call and while its one of my favorite movies i'm not convinced its the 'best ever'.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
Saw 'The Guard' last night - nice little Irish black comedy.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
Just seen it this afternoon. Absolutely brilliant and funny film. Piss-take of Single-Handed. Brendan Gleeson is perfectly cast and gives an absolute gem of a performance as a Falstaffian rogue who comes good. Definitely deserves a follow-up.
Heard from a friend who saw Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy yesterday. Pretty dire, he reckons. Gary Oldman and Colin Firth are hopelessly miscast in the Alec Guinness and Ian Richardson roles from the BBC-TV series. Unlike The Guard the script is leaden and maladroit. Even communist-ruled Budapest is shown as more preferable to live in than 1970s London. Says it all. Why can't they leave classics alone and not make these pisspoor remakes?

I haven't seen it yet, but seeing as it has universal praise from the critics (link) I think I'll give it a go. Your friend probably went in there with the attitude that I've highlighted in bold before he'd even sat down I imagine.Allan D wrote:Just seen it this afternoon. Absolutely brilliant and funny film. Remake doesn't automatically mean "bad film", undoubtedly there have been a crap load of piss poor remakes over the last 10 or so years but that doesn't mean they all are. The remake of True Grit was pretty damn good for instance.

Actually he was a fan before he saw it but his disappointment didn't surprise me. Got TG on DVD but haven't watched it yet.
You can't remake Alec Guinness classics - Kind Hearts and Coronets, Bridge on the River Kwai, Tinker, Tailor.... He was such an inimitable genius that they should stand alone. Remember the dreadful remake of The Ladykillers with Tom Hanks? Too cringeworthy for words. One of the few remakes that was any good was Alfred Hitchcock's 1955 remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much but then he directed the original!

Such a pity, I just recently watched the original with Guinness and Richardson.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
I've always found Le Carre's work to be a little dry although i did like the Alec Guinness version of Tinker Tailor. I don't think i'll bother with the remake.
Re: Films you've watched recently.
I quite liked The Ladykillers remake. But I'm a big Coen Brothers fan.

Was on tele last night.
Had no expectations, as I couldn't give a hoot about Banksy or the street-art "phenomenon", but I thought it might be diverting.
Was bloody brilliant. An unexpectedly comical gem.
On More4 tonight, philistines.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
Saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy a few weeks ago. Lovely film. Some really memorable shots and very well acted. Mark Strong is a brilliant actor - unrecognisable from the bad guy in Kick Ass and again from his role in Syriana. I thought the plot was just the right level of intricate and the ending was very matter of fact and well judged.
I say all this having not read the books or seen the Alex Guinness originals. Overall I think the right adjective is "satisfying". Succeeds on its own terms and looks great. I understand there are a series of books so I'd like to see a sequel. Smiley's people I think.
