Lara Lara Laughs wrote:Saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy a few weeks ago. Lovely film. Some really memorable shots and very well acted. Mark Strong is a brilliant actor - unrecognisable from the bad guy in Kick Ass and again from his role in Syriana. I thought the plot was just the right level of intricate and the ending was very matter of fact and well judged.
I say all this having not read the books or seen the Alec Guinness originals. Overall I think the right adjective is "satisfying". Succeeds on its own terms and looks great. I understand there are a series of books so I'd like to see a sequel. Smiley's people I think.

Aye, Chris Morris especially. Have you seen any of the other stuff he's done?

Nah, other than vaguely recognising his face I wasn't familiar with him.

Get on the Brass Eye stuff from the 90's and he wrote a series called Nathan Barley a few years back. Mentally funny.
Re: Films you've watched recently.
we seem to get every other british tv show over here but I have not heard of them

Re: Films you've watched recently.
It's a piece of piss. Get Frostwire or Tixati. Tixati's better for download speeds but you have to search for 'torrent's on google. i.e. "Brass Eye torrent" and a list of sites come up. The best being pirate bay. Frostwire is easier for the nephew-needers

Re: Films you've watched recently.
Quick one. In the past month:
> The Guard - Lovely. Slightly prefer In Bruges. Love Gleeson and Mark Strong (incredible actor)
> Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - Beautifully shot. Beautifully acted. Understated but great. Mark Strong brill again.
> Drive - stylised to within an inch of it's life and seems to have lots of bits from different films but still fantastic. One of the best of the year but preferred Gosling in Blue Valentine
> Blue Valentine - Nearly wept. Depressing but incredibly good. Especially the performances.
> The Believer - saw this before but couldn't remember much. Re-watched. Again, very good. Probably a more interesting look at Nazism than the feted American History X. Has too many ideas swirling about though.
> The Skin I Live In - Stylish and a bit grim but thoroughly entertained for the duration. Antonio Banderas could turn me.
So I've done pretty well in terms of "good sh!t". Loved/liked all of them.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
Nevertheless, like jokes, the old ones are often the gold ones.
If you liked Jimmy S in It's A Wonderful Life you might try him in Ernst Lubitsch's 1940 comedy The Shop Around the Corner set in pre-WWI Prague.

I've only seen it once but it's reputation as the ultimate feel good film is justified from what I remember.Yorkie Jill wrote:watched 'It's a wonderful life' for the first time.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
It was really depressing for most of the way through, so I was beginning to wonder where the feel good-ness was coming from. I mean, it's really low!
And when he's mean to his kids, it feels awful, even though a parent shouting at a kid is hardly a traumatic event, for me anyway.
Then, somehow, yeah, the end feels awesome!
Thanks AD. I looked up some of his other films because yup, I liked him a lot! I will try to have a gander at that one, certainly.

Re: Films you've watched recently.
Just watched a DVD of Cowboys & Aliens. Despite the 'B' movie title, its not bad. Daniel Craig shows he is not just another 'Bond" clone & Harrison Ford is...well...Harrison Ford.
Worth a look.
