KP V Ponting
Who's likely to have the more impressive career record once they've both retired?

They'll be pretty much the same. I think it's safe to say that Ponting cant get any better than he is now, whereas KP probably hasnt reached his peak yet.

Re: KP V Ponting
Trying to guess what will happen to kp in ten years is a waste of time.
All we can do is compare ponting and kp since kp came on the scene and really it's a no contest.
Ponting has averaged 70 to kp's 52.

Stats dont tell the whole story. KP has averaged 60 against Aus, and hasnt played a test against Bangladesh yet.

Fair enough when we are talking about 2-5 runs per innings.
But when it's nearly 20 runs per innings over a nearly 3 year period it pretty much does tell the story and damn conclusively at that.

Pietersen may shade his team-mates more than Ponting does, so it is natural that English fans have very high hopes for him.
But in a head to heads comparison, as pdy states, Pietersen is way behind Ponting at present.

Ponting's awesome. Still, must be nice to have had a grinder and imposing FTB beforehand and a few damn fine lower order players to partner later on.

Re: KP V Ponting
There could be debate there... their careers ran pretty parallel, but these two's haven't. Plus the Aussies are Ponting-fellating sookpiles so there isn't going to be much apart from a few tears.
Re: KP V Ponting
I think you'll find that what may happen will be they may end up with similar overall stats, if KP actually stops being a billy big shot and becaomes the player he could be.
Ponting's stats over the last three years can not IMO be compared to KP's.
Ponting is established in a side with 10 years of test cricket behind him, whilst KP has only played Test cricket for 3 years.
You'll also find that you could only compare them once they have played as comparitively as many games against all nations home and away.
This is a debate for maybe 2 years time.
AS for my Personal viewpoint, I dont believe KP to be the Player Ponting is, and I doubt he will be either.

Re: KP V Ponting
Firstly: Punter hasn't had to face Warne and McGrath in his career. Neither has he had to face Mohammad Asif since Asif's uninspiring test debut.
Compare the first 2.5 years of Punters career with the that of KP. If KP improves to the degree Punter has in the last 6/7 years of his career he will be averaging around 70 after such a period of time.
Right now, I'd say they're about even. Let's see how things pan out.

He has faced Murali, Kumble, Donald, Pollock, etc....
Plus he was 5 years younger than KP when he made his debut......
They are nowhere even... Ponting averages 7 more than KP over a much longer period of time....

Yeah, whatever. If KP were Aussie I'm sure your argument would be reversed.

Silly argument anyway kp never had to face ambrose and walsh, ponting had to face them when he was basically still a kid.

WTF does it matter ? KP and Punter will never be competing for the same batting spot in any serious team ....unless the Poms introduce quotas

And kp might have averaged 20.
We can't know just as can't know whether ponting would have dominated warne and mcgrath.
What we do know is what they have actually done and on that score ponting is well ahead.

Re: KP V Ponting
KP needs to control his anger. He has the potential of being an all time great, KP can be better than Ponting if he can grasp India pitches.
We all know Punter is bit amateur on India pitches (see 2001 Series).
KP will have a belter on his next tour of Auss, so I think he has pretty much got Ponting on that. A good test tour of SAF and NZ will be key for KP.
