Kallis is a great for me. The only thing holding the Saffie batting order together, which is quite average in tests.

Personally, I don't think KP will cash in against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe as much as some other batsmen of this era. Against lesser opposition, he's often seemed disintersted, perhaps because he thinks it's all a bit below him.
I refer you to his genuinely hilarious stumping agaisnt Dwayne Leverock in the world cup.
He seems more to care about the spectacle and the event than about his average, is what I'm trying to say.

Yep, KP will dig a team out of a hole when they're 20 -2 more times than he will do well when they're 200 -2

Dunno about that. I always felt England were in control when he was batting. There was not the sense that the bastman was running away with it, as with Viv or Lara.

His runs and average make him one of the greats

And Ponting has dominated Murali on numerous occasions.
I wasn't detracting from Ponting's batting. I was detracting from the statement that sounded like Ponting only played great bowlers and dominated.
I've already said I think Ponting is better, I just also think that KP's immense start against all-comers shouldn't be underestimated.

But that shows the limitations of just looking at stats. Richards is definitely remembered as one of the greats, yet his average doesn't begin to come close to someone like Ponting or Kallis. Yet will those two be mentioned in the same awed tones as Sir Viv? I'm not so sure they will, you know - though it's really hard with current players to know for sure.
But my point is that stats only take you so far. Richards was far more than just a run scorer to all of us who remember him, he had an aura.

I don't think they will be.
I think historians will rate Ponting above Kallis the batsman, however.

On International Cricket Captain, Pietersen scored an unbeaten, chance-less 243 on a day five pitch that was turning backwards, to lead England home in an amazing chase-down of 513 against India in India.
That's genius right there. Let's put this debate to bed.

And Steve Waugh looked out of his depth as a batsman, but a useful change bowler.
Kallis isn't crap now?
