James Taylor wins Young Cricketer award
http://www.cricinfo.com/england/content/current/story/426024.html
So, how good is he, or could he become? Can't recall actually having seen him bat, unless I caught a bit of him playing in some meaningless Pro40 or something, don't tend to pay too much attention when Leicestershire are on the TV!
Apparently Broad was second, which is strange as I didn't think a player could win this twice. The list of recent winners reads like quite a Who's Who of international craptitude - Bopara, Bell, Anderson, Shah, and they're just the ones who did make it as far as playing a reasonable number of times for England. So in most cases it's not a guarantee of a great future, but it must be rare for someone as young as 19 to win it.

Re: James Taylor wins Young Cricketer award
Seen him about 3 or 4 times max on TV - shortarse busy little player. Not struck me as someone who should be averaging close to 50 though tbh.
But i've only seen him in T20/Pro40 mode to be fair

I reckon he's got something. Was impressed with him at Trent Bridge in the T20 this season.
Can't believe how small he is though!
He really is a diddy man.
Even looks a bit like Doddy thinking about it . . .

Statistically he deserves it. I guess Woakes and Hales were his only real competition. In the long term, I think Hales has more potential.

So he's English? (as opposed to England Qualified...)
And hasn't the young player of the year award been somewhat of an albatross in the Aus cricket structure too?

Let's see how Taylor goes next season before writing any eulogies - second season syndrome and all that.

Re: James Taylor wins Young Cricketer award
According to the Playfair Cricket Annual, Taylor was born in Nottingham in January 1990 but was educated at Shrewsbury, alma mater of Charles Darwin, Michael Palin and the founders of Private Eye and played for Worcs 2nds and Shropshire while still at Shrewsbury. He made his Leicestershire debut last year.
Although the Cricket Writers' selections have won over 2000 Test caps between them (including 26 Test caps & 198 ODI caps by Andrew Symonds for Australia) there have been some notable gaffes, such as in 1971 when Bob Willis (despite having been part of an Ashes-winning side when he was flown out to replace Alan Ward) was overlooked in favour of the Warwickshire batsman, John Whitehouse, in 1972 when Willis was again overlooked in favour of the Surrey batsman, Dudley Owen-Thomas and in 1975 when Graham Gooch was overlooked in favour of the Lancashire batsman, Andrew Kennedy.
None of the 3 award-winners from those years went on to win a single Test or even ODI cap whereas Willis and Gooch did quite well, as I recall.
