Re: Time for a music thread
It's a fairly big call to make, but I reckon that Wish You Were Here is Floyd's best album.
I never tire of listening to it, and not a single second is wasted, I find that at no point do I think "I should skip this track" or "The good bit is coming soon". It's just brilliant from start to finish. I also seem to find new things in it every listen, despite having heard it around 100 times or more.

Aye, and I rate 'Meddle' highly. The later stuff (Wall, Animals) appeals to me much less.

Re: Time for a music thread
Echoes is a bit too proggy for me and I actually do think to my self "it gets good in a bit" when the weird part starts. I love the rest of the album though.lardbucket wrote:Aye, and I rate 'Meddle' highly. The later stuff (Wall, Animals) appeals to me much less.
And I rate Animals pretty highly, if I had to rank their albums it would be something like Wish You Were Here>Animals>Dark Side>Meddle>The Wall>Piper> then quite a bit of daylight as I don't really rate their other stuff.
High Hopes is a quality track, but the rest of Division Bell is pretty gash. I went through a brief period where I liked Atom Heart Mother but I don't listen to it a lot these days.
I listen to The Wall more than Dark Side but that's mainly because I've played Dark Side to death. I've played Wish you Were Here even more but as I said I just don't get bored of a single second of it.
I listened to The Wall on vinyl first, and side 3 which is "Hey You" to "Comfortably Numb" would run Wish you Were Here pretty close if I take it as a separate album, which I almost do as I've listened to side 3 far more than the rest of the album.
Top band, anyway, which goes without saying.

No mention of 'Obscured By Clouds' ... have you had a listen? It's actually not too bad, although it sank almost without trace ...

Re: Time for a music thread
Sank with good reason IMO... Not in the same league as their other work, lots of pointless meandering guitar wankiness.
I know a lot of their stuff has tangents, but on Division Bell (other than High Hopes) and Obscured it just seems pointlessly self-indulgent and not particularly creative, tuneful, or good.
I think that's why Wish you Were Here is so genius, it's one of their proggiest albums but it all seems to mattter and each song works in it's own right as well as contributing to the cohesive whole.

Nice one Lardy. Obviously pre Nicks/Buckingham. I'm guessing recorded around the time of Albatross?

Wishing you all a merry Christmas, as full of gay abandon as the bassist in the clip!
