Re: All time SA team
Funny. A great record but I felt Gary never watched the ball (a bit like Bevo). Obvo great eye-hand coordination, so no need to watch it right onto the bat.

If I had to pick a Saffie to play for his own life it would be Kallis.

To broaden the selection criteria, here are a few more legendary Sith Effrikins:
Nelson Mandela
Christian Barnard
Allan Paton
JM Coetzee
Gary Player
Ernie Els
Amanda Coetzer
Desmond Tutu
Manfred Mann

f.
Interesting because all the reading I've done (and backed up by footage of pie chuckers) has suggested that it was a very batsmen-friendly era apart from the odd time when there were wet pitches because they were obviously uncovered back then. Yet many take umbrage if you mount such an argument in the context of the records of the great men of that era such as Bradman and Hammond.

What no Slovo, Tambo or Suzmann?
Thoough if you wanted some South Africans to play for your lives you could include: van den Bergh, a couple of Malans, a Verwoerd, some Bothas and a Vorster.

Keepers - It's a straight choice between Cameron and Waite. Both were great keepers and decent batsmen. The others were/are decent keepers and decent batsmen.

Faulkner as the number 6
Pollock or Procter as number 8. Probably Pollock but you get the feeling that Procter just might have been the greatest all rounder ever. If only....

I'm going for Lindsay, but cricinfo will go for Waite.
Better keeper but Lindsay was better than Gilchrist in 66/67

Other than that one series Waites record is better as a batsman. At first class level they had similar averages but Waite scored twice as many centuries. Waite was the better keeper.
Unless players are to be judged only on their best three months there is no reason to prefer Lindsay.
