Ashwell Prince, I guess. He got his chance through the quota system 6 years ago and has worked hard at his game and is now one of South Africa's most reliable batsmen and the test vice captain.
Makhaya Ntini. There was a stage where the politicians unashamedly made sure he wasn't dropped after taking something like 2 wickets in 9 games.

George always had raw potential, though. I can still remember his ODI debut at Brisbane back in 1998. He absolutely sprinted in at full pelt, bowled the ball at 150 kph, then jogged back to his mark to bowl again.

Lots of people have raw potential. But if you're considering whether to play someone against Australia in Australia who has taken 2 wickets in their last 9 games, then you are mad as the answer to that 'dilemma' is clearly 'No.' The politicians had other ideas though. He later said himself that his play in that series was badly affected as he knew he wasn't there on merit.

Don't see a problem with a bit of 'positive discrimination' at the provincial level, but the national team should be the best of the best, regardless of race colour or creed...

I do. It's been taken right down to the most junior provincial levels and is chasing kids away from the game
FFS these kids were not even born in the apartheid era.

How do you explain that to a 12 year old who had outplayed a player, who can't even hold a bat, in a trial match, that the inferior player was picked because of balance.

I am talking junior provincial level. The cancer has spread all the way down, diluting the standard of the game. And leading players to leave the game in droves. The standard at club level is now laughable.

Friend's 11-year-old son got picked for the schools provincial athletics team. Got a huge send-off from his school, as he was the first so honoured from the town - and was then told his selection was a "mistake"...taipan wrote:How do you explain that to a 12 year old who had outplayed a player, who can't even hold a bat, in a trial match, that the inferior player was picked because of balance.
Personally I see the quota system as hogwash designed to keep the well-connected officials looking good and earning their huge salaries. So much easier than doing real development work in the backwaters where one is not seen by the media, isn't it?

It must be about time to congratulate Robert Mugabe. He's managed to hang on to power long enough in Zimbabwe for the cancer of his reign to start spreading to South Africa. Excellent work, he must be proud.mynah wrote:Some hard-hitting words from Jake White
Obviously winning the World Cup is not nearly as important as the fat cats keeping their jobs. Surprise, surprise, the brother of the Minister of Sport is among them and apparently earmarked for the top post...

Hmmmmmm - thanks bliksem - 2 wickets in 9 games - Brett Lee like non-productivity.

Aren't some people complaining that there are too few Asians playing for Australia? Someone must have thought Lee was a Chinese surname.

If I have this wrong you'll hear the Sydney spivs loading their machine guns......... I think that his "Bing" nickname (leading to the use of "Bung" by we really witty Aus forum members) came from "Bing Lee" a chinese owned retail chain store in spiv central.

Looks like Alan Jones is formally nominating for the Australian Coaches job.
If he gets it, I will be supporting the All Blacks during the next Bledisloe Cup.

I'd like to see Nucifora get the job, but giving Jones a year in charge could be good for the Wallabies.
We need to learn how to make the best use of our backs again. Jones will coach the team to keep the ball off the ground and in the hand. It's good positive attacking rugby and that should be the style Australia is aiming for.
Give him a year to shake things up then send him on his way before he makes any enemies within the team.

Nucifora did a bloody good job with the Brumbies, especially in the last year when the players were effectively revolting behind the scenes.
Given that most of those players are now gone, I think he has to be the man for the job.
If Jones gets it, the Wallabies will never be sighted inside their own 22, mainly because they'll be too scared from training sessions where Jones would be standing on the goal lline with his strides around his ankles.
