Re: The Football Thread - 09/10 (II)
I don't see it. Spurs have pissed 4th away - it's City's to lose now.
And Arse were never seriously in the title hunt - Chelsea are home and hosed.
Spuds will finish 6th. Arse 3rd.
Meaningless game.

Re: The Football Thread - 09/10 (II)
spurs are 4 points off city with a game in hand. arsenal are 3 behind chelsea.
with 5/6 games still to play, i hope for the fans sake that the players are more optimistic than you!

Spurs have to play City before the end of the season too, albeit at Eastlands.
The key for them is going to be three games in a row they've got against United, Arsenal and Chelsea. City have it only slightly better, but slightly may be enough.

Don't know about slightly, Shoey - though I'm only saying that because of our past 2 games! We've got Utd at home, Arse (A), Villa and Spurs at home and West Ham (A). In current form I don't see any of those sides fancying us, especially at Eastlands. Spurs have Bolton and Burnley as well as the current top 4, as you mentioned, to play, and both of those could be scrapping for their survival.

A simple case of more of the same from Spurs.Ash wrote:Zat wrote:There's no heartbreak in that, Spurs have had a shocking record against Chelsea for aeons. To lose to Portsmouth OTOH, who have been confirmed for the drop next season, and are so broke that their players may be hitch-hiking to the game, that would be typical of the chokers from White Hart Lane.
good call
biggest NLD since 06 (race for 4th), lot riding on it for both teams now.
I guess all that's left to hope for in the season is that Chelsea now find a way to cock-up the double and win nothing.
Although choosing which of Man U and Chelsea I's prefer to see win the EPL is kind of like being asked whether I'd prefer to be infected with syphilis or gonorrhea.

Yer farkin kiddin' me? Any time I get to see that idiot Scotsman ranting on the sideline or in the post-match press conference about how the Scum was ripped off, is a good day indeed.Zat wrote:Although choosing which of Man U and Chelsea I's prefer to see win the EPL is kind of like being asked whether I'd prefer to be infected with syphilis or gonorrhea.

skulls, who would you prefer as number one nation in cricket? England or South Africa? I believe the parallel holds up.

You must be constantly on edge now that England are kind of South Africa.

Just think, England are the only country in the world that could just possibly hold the World Cups in cricket, football and rugby. I know, I know, I know, but just imagine. The suicide rate down under would soar!

Nah. Most of us would cheer an English "Soccer" (yes, yes, I hate the word too) World Cup victory.

Really? Because of the familiarity of the Premier League? I'm genuinely surprised.
I always say that the English/Australian rivalry is completely unique in world sport, in that it's as intense as any but friendlier than all others. I don't know of any other one that's all about wanting to be able to take the piss in the pub together.

Indeed. I grew up on an excellent diet of Brian Moore and The Big Match. I haven't missed an FA Cup Final in over 30 years (midnight kick-off).
And aye on the friendly but intense rivalry. As much as I hate losing the Ashes, I certainly don't begrudge my English comrades the joy, as I well and truly know what it feels like.

Brian Moore was a great commentator. Even not being an Arsenal or Liverpool fan, his "It's up for grabs now" is a great telly moment as well as a great sporting moment.

Aye, as a wee tacker then teen in the 70s, I used to excitedly look forward to our Saturday helping of Brian Moore (a week behind but I didn't know any different).

On the subject of greats, here's a remarkable interview with the legendary goalkeeper Bert Trautmann. He's not nearly as famous as he ought to be, though for City fans he has a special place even in the hearts of those like me who never saw him play.
Linky
He probably did more for post-war Anglo-German relations than any other individual. And of course the broken neck story is just amazing. My mother for one, growing up in post-war Manchester, absolutely adored him.

Unlike the ginger haired Jocks from above Hadrians wall ... who, when they say they hope England get dumped out of the first round of the FIFA world cup, actually mean it with a vengance.
I'd have to say I've had several banters and debates in pubs and at matches with hosts of Aussies on a whole range of sports - and it's never got beyond the piss-taking stage ... both sides ... but you try that with a Glasweigan brick-head and you're setting yourself up for a "I'll see youze owtside in the car park maite" ...

Great story - saw him on TV during the Birmingham game. Was shocked to see he is 86, looks in good nick.

bolton denied two handball penalties as luck continues to favour chelsea. really should have dropped 2 points yesterday (as against utd).
van persie back for the arse tonight, probably start on the bench but we needed some creativity up front in arshavin and fabregas' absence.
