Sniper's Bullet was fun
Thorn Park was fun
Private Steer was fun
Never Undercharge was fun
Daybreak Lover was fun twice
Imposing was fun
Ducatoon was fun even though they eventually took the race off her.

If the toppie's good enough. Rough habit for example, and it wasn't exactly racing in an era of pet food on legs.
As for tomorrow Melito.

Just noticed Swift Alliance has been scratched & Latin News gets the start. I though it was a good thing last week but he couldn't get a clear run. He has to be a big chance tomorrow.

Mate, there have been plenty of popular winners.
In my humble it's just not a great race & there not not too many absolute national Hall of Famers on the Honour Board.

Such is the nature of handicaps. I would think most serious racing fans would considered the Doomben Ten Thousand to be a far classier race.

Agreed mate & hence my original question about htf some random 7 furlong handicap became our big race.
Frankly, my favourite is the the Doomben Cup, similarity to the Cox Plate I guess.

You could say the same about the Melbourne Cup.
For some reason Australian's like races that give pit ponies a chance against superstars

Absolutely and you're right about the pit ponies thing. But the Melbourne Cup was set up a something extraordinary to be gin with. Archer being walked from Sydney to Melbourne must have meant some reasonable money was on offer.
If we go with the nature of Aussies thing I don't get how a feckin 7 furlong race rose to the top.

I was going to say that may have something to do with the attention span of a billy not extending behond 7f but then I remembered that the biggest Spiv race is a 1200m scamper for the kiddies.

Re: The Horse Racing Thread
How good is the Hayes horse Nicconi (Dettori up) - running in the King's Stand Stakes over the straight 5 F course at Royal Ascot this afternoon ?
A couple of Aussie pundits here reckon it's the dog's bollocks ... also the odds have been tumbling these past 48 hours - now 11/4 fave.
Anyone got a time for Nicconi's win over the 5F Lightning at Flemington?

Re: The Horse Racing Thread
Nicconi is very good but I'd rate Takeover Target & Miss Andretti above him. The Lightning was run in 57.12. The final 600m was run in 32.81 with Nicconi coming from the tail of the field. I'd like to see him win but he is not overly consistent so I am thinking of taking the locals in our treble cos they will be much better value over here. Who you rate highest of them? Kingsgate Native, Equiano, Borderlescott or someone else?

Re: The Horse Racing Thread
Could we also have tips on the Queen Anne Stakes & the St James Palace Stakes?
I backed Paco Boy in the Lockinge & he was a class above that field (although Ouqba ran quite well) but can he match it with Goldikova & Rip Van Winkle?
I guess the other race is between Makfi, Canford Cliffs & Dick Turpin. Thoughts?
I'm hoping there will be a lot of drunks betting on the treble at 11.30pm our time & it might pay better than it really should.

Re: The Horse Racing Thread
Thanks fellas ... agree WW ... Takeover and Miss Andretti were two class sprinters ... Choisir too .... something Nicconi's got to emulate here... big ask IMO... but like I said, a couple of Aussie Newspaper pundits have bigged him up seriously !
Kingsgate Native beat Equiano 1/2L (easily) over the straight 5 at Haydock on Gd/Firm (58.92s) - it was KN's first run and Equiano's 3rd.... so I too favour Stoute's Kingsgate Native to win providing the bounce factor holds off.
Borderlescott is a tough old veteran (8yo) who was 3rd in KN's Haydock race 1/2, 3/4l behind.
Lumping those 3 with Nicconi in a tricast

Thanks Merls for the background on the local horses. I might do the same over here in a trifecta with those 4 horses.
