On his 36th birthday, Adam Gilchrist was today named Australia's greatest ever one-day international cricketer.
Gilchrist was given that honour by his peers, with all 163 players to have represented Australia in ODIs invited to vote on the best.
In total, 110 players voted and Gilchrist won comfortably with 38 per cent of the poll from his captain Ricky Ponting (19 per cent) and former skipper Steve Waugh(14 per cent).
Three-time World Cup winner Gilchrist received the honour at an Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) function at Bellerive Oval in Hobart, where the second Test against Sri Lanka starts on Friday.
Gilchrist saved his best until last in this year's Caribbean World Cup campaign with a spectactular 149 off 104 balls against Sri Lanka in the final in Barbados.
The ACA held a special tribute dinner in Sydney in February to announce Australia's greatest ever ODI team, again as voted by former and current Australian ODI players.
The team was: Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Dean Jones, Steve Waugh (capt), Michael Bevan, Andrew Symonds, Shane Warne, Brett Lee, Dennis Lillee, Glenn McGrath, Greg Chappell (12th man).

Well, it was either him or Bevan. I'd have voted Bevan.

Did they invite Hooksey with a ouija board?

Hmmm would have been more inclined to give it to Deano, guess the more recent players had the advantage.

I thought they announced an all time Australian ODI team about 18 months ago?

I think his breathtaking ton against SL in this year's WC finals must've been biggest reason for him being selected as Australia's greatest ever ODI player.

He's very good, but his ODI batting has been a bit hit and miss since 2004. In fact, his batting in general has been like that in the last 3 years. 2001-02 was his absolute peak as a batsman, imo.

He had a brilliant spell in tests in 04-05 where he went ballistic against Pakistan and NZ in successive series.
Then he had that shocking Ashes 05 after which he has been feast or famine.

3 times WC winner with a century in a final. Loads runs at a great rate and average. Ponting is close but I would go Gilchrist as well.

I would have said McGrath. It's much harder to be a bowler than a batsman in the one day game.
