Man of The Series
For me its between Ally Cook, or Jimmy.
Alastair has broken the records, and with the other bats have put us in winning positions, but .....
Jimmy & Co have won us the games.
Joint award for me, but if I must choose, Jimmy just shades it.

Hard to imagine it won't go to Cook. I mean, just look at his numbers!
Bowling's a mug's game - batsmen get the glory.

Re: Man of The Series
Jimmy has been absolutely magnificent.
But it has to be Cook, just has to be. He's been incredible. Saved the Gabba test, set up the wins in Adelaide & Melbourne. Then rammed it down their throats in Sydney. Who would of thought he'd be our star man?

Who could he have picked though?
There isn't a batsman in Australia who could have coped with our bowling and whatever bowlers you'd have picked Cook, Strauss, Trott, Pietersen, Bell & Prior would have scored runs off them.
All Hilditch could have hoped for was 3-1 without the innings defeats if they had selected the best XI. We'd still have won comfortably though.
Re: Man of The Series
He could've picked Hauritz from T1 and got an opener with a technique.

As a frustrated bowler who could bat a bit and thus had to play as opener or first drop rather than six, I couldn't agree with you more. However in this instance Cook gave his bowlers the luxury of defending big totals and acting aggressively. Should be a lay down misere for MoS.

He could have, and it would have improved the Australia team.
But England would still have won.

Give that man a knighthood.

Re: Man of The Series
Cook was the obvious choice, sh!t* of runs, more time at the crease than any batsman in Ashes history, averaged higher than Hammond did in the series he scored 905 in 6 Tests.
And without a hint of 'style'.
And running like Woody between wickets. (The one from Toy Story, not the Aussie of the 70s/80s, or the forumer here.)

Re: Man of The Series
Couldn't be anyone else with the records he's set, although there's a number of players who would have been deserving winners if you take his achievements out of the equation.
Cook's average is now less than one run behind KP's, quite remarkable when you think that for a few years KP was averaging 50 and everyone else in the England top 6 just above 40. We used to disparagingly call them the "40 Club", keep your average above that level and you'll stay in the side no matter what...

I wish he'd get a less silly helmet. It's like a London bobby's, bobbing about.

Alistar Cook was extraordinary - Jimmy was just plain very bloody good.
What has constantly amazed me about Cook is the number of balls he played with a hooded face & survived. That's not a put down; just bloody weird.

Was only 5 tests in 28/9. Hammond would have had more innings though because they were timeless tests.

Re: Man of The Series
On pure stats you couldn't go past Chef, but I reckon Jimmy was as valuable. His bowling was simply outstanding. Farkin Anderson Cycle got stuck on 12 O'Clock for the whole damn series.Growler wrote:For me its between Ally Cook, or Jimmy.
