Re: Virat Kohli- Very fine talent!
His 183 against Pakistan and the innings against SL were unbelievably brilliant. The innings against Pakistan was probably one of the top 3 innings ever in an ODI game. Even in test matches he was India's best batsman on his first tour of Australia

... because it was fast?
It was a good innings, but one of the best 3 ODI innings since 1971? You are kidding. What about Kapil Dev in that World Cup, which he single-handedly saved then won for India? Steve Waugh's innings that saved and then won us the WC v South Africa? Ponting in that WC final v India in South Africa? Gilchrist? Herschelle Gibbs? Any one of a number of utterly brilliant innings by Viv Richards? Allan Lamb's onslaught v Bruce Reid? Michael Bevan's salvage effort v West Indies? Saeed Anwar? The Bangladeshi hero who almost single-handedly flogged the Aussies? Then there wass this bloke called Tendulkar ... and another even better chap called Lara ...
I doubt it's even amongst the best 3 ODI innings played by an Indian, or even by Indians not called Sachin.

Not so much...none of those innings were as good as Kohli's knocklardbucket wrote:PlanetPakistan wrote:The innings against Pakistan was probably one of the top 3 innings ever in an ODI game

Viv Richard's 189* is the best innings ever after that it is a bit debatable

Re: Virat Kohli- Very fine talent!
i will not include Kapil's innings due to the weak attack that he was facing.
A Razzaq's innings vs SA in 2010 was probably better than Kapil's

Gibbs and Ponting in the 438 game were both better.

look what that 'weak' attack did to that year's WC winners before Kapil went off
It's the situation that made that innings truly great

Ponting and Gilchrist's innings in the final of the 2003 and 2007 World cups respectively, Herschelle's knock in the 438 game, Steve Waugh's innings' against South Africa in the 1999 World Cup, Viv and Kapil's innings (that have been mentioned).....
PP needs to realise that great ODI knocks also need context.

i doubt many commenting on here saw kohli's knock. since the early 90s i have seen most of the great innings either live or later on, and kohli's knock was right up there

Re: Virat Kohli- Very fine talent!
The most interesting thing about this discussion is the great difficulty people are having recalling many wonderful ODI innings from more than 20 years ago. Just Kapil Dev's monstering knock, and Viv.

i havent seen any odis from before 20 years ago, so cant say much. they are not as much of a discussion point as of course tests from years ago

Shahid bhai's innings is certainly up there in top 5 and may just have been on par if not better than Kohli'sHenry wrote:Afridi's 37 ball hundred on debut, back when he was still a sperm?
Despite some very weak teams and easy batting condition in 16 years no one has even come CLOSE to breaking that record.

Mudge, you're off your tits. Jaya's not Pakistani, so it couldn't have been that good.
Re: Virat Kohli- Very fine talent!
Henry,
Jayasuriya's 100 was of 48 balls.
