Re: UK politics thread (II)
Now it’s a question of whether enough MPs can stop the party members bringing Boris back.

KC3 already up to his second PM - he's on track to beat mum in a fraction of the time.

If he gets as far as the members then he’s all but guaranteed. Could be a mutiny of MPs though, with some hinting they will quit or defect to other parties if it happens.skully wrote:Shirley they won't go back to Boris?

Ed Balls might be a better shout! (Wrong party, I know… and retired from politics, though his wife’s still a Labour frontbencher. Sensibly didn’t take his surname.)lardbucket wrote:The definition of a Truss: balls up, guaranteed.

Anyway, seems either a Johnson or Sunak win would split the party down the middle and lead to more carnage. The only other confirmed candidate, Penny Mordaunt, doesn’t seem to be getting much momentum.
Around 40 defections/resignations from the party could force a General Election. Meanwhile, Boris if he returns could be forced out again by Christmas via the Partygate inquiry.

Yeah, he has now. Claims he had twice as many backers as publicly revealed, but says he’s doing it for the sake of party unity after the other candidates wouldn’t make a deal with him (I’m sure all such acceptable deals from his side had him as PM). All about him, as usual…lardbucket wrote:Boris has withdrawn, hasn't he?

And Rishi is in. A bit of stability (he had backing from all wings of the party, and it’s only the staunch Boris supporters that seem too pissed off) or just another stepping stone to an early election? Time will tell…

In 1974 Brian Clough was manager of Leeds United for exactly the same length of time as Truss was PM. Truss's family were Leeds supporters, she did half her secondary education at a Leeds school and later studied at Leeds University. Her PM acceptance speech at several points referred to or quoted Clough's Leeds predecessor, Don Revie.

Well, he was born in the UK to parents born in Tanzania and Kenya (who were obviously themselves of Indian parentage).skully wrote:A Bannie as UK PM??

His wife is the daughter of one of India’s richest men. So the Downing Street redecoration shouldn’t be an issue. In fact, King Charles might be asking him for the odd fiver to help with the energy bills…

Cheers beams.
He looked very robotic during his acceptance speech. Thunderbirds are go.
Is it a stretch for me to say the Brexit vote had a modicum of racism in it ("ban those lousy migrants")? Ironic if so, that the UK has a man of colour in the top job.

Re: UK politics thread (II)
It’s interesting, because the ethnic minority Tories often tend to be more vocally anti-migrant and anti-“woke” than the white ones (e.g. former Home Secretaries Priti ‘Vacant’ Patel and Suella ‘De Vil’ Braverman, either of whom could be reinstated to that job today). Not sure if Sunak falls into that category himself but there is that sense that with immigrant backgrounds themselves, they can say things that white politicians wouldn’t dare to…skully wrote:Cheers beams.

Still not sure, though, whether the predominantly elderly Conservative Party membership would have voted for Sunak given a straight choice between him and a white candidate, even if it wasn’t Boris.
In terms of his politics, at least he seems more pragmatic and hopefully will swerve both Johnson’s “cakeism” and Truss’s crackpot ideological fixations. It will depend on how much he can tame the rogue elements/competing wings of the party though.

Yeah, at least he’s financially literate which has to be an essential quality for the job in this scenario.
