Re: UK politics thread (II)
Bor-exit looks imminent… even Priti Vacant has turned on him, though his puppy dog Dorries appears not to have.

And it comes to pass.
As the headlines say - from genuine, highly likeable champion at election time, to devious, deceitful (couldn't lie straight in bed) clown not long after.

Boris comes across as a bit bitter. He was sprung scarfing cakies at a Midnight feast at Eton. What's a bit of slap, tickle and grope between boon companions? Rules for the elites and rules for the great unwashed.
Good fun seeing him go. Will be slithering around the speakers circuit, hunting quids.
Above all it is a very happy day for people in England and Europe.

Re: UK politics thread (II)
The last time he was vaguely likeable was as London Mayor a decade ago. By the time he became PM even most of his own party had realised he was a chancer with no morals or integrity, and little in terms of policy other than “have your cake and eat it” and making unrealistic promises to everyone. But they went for him, for better or worse, as he was a vote winner, the Heineken Tory so to speak. It was always likely to end like this, and with an almost Trump-like reluctance to leave with good grace or to admit to any of his failings.skully wrote:And it comes to pass.

Hopefully they choose someone who can at least calm things down for a while, and restore our reputation as a nation that can be trusted.

Hope he is not replaced by Priti Vacant (as you call her)
Relations need attention in Ireland and Europe.

... too late, I fear. England following the USA down the sluice.
Nicola Sturgeon must have come five times yesterday.

Whoever wins, they’re not going to give any ground to Sturgeon. The Tories just see Scotland as a possession, the last colonies of the Empire along with Wales and Northern Ireland. The “UK” government has less than 20 MPs outside of England.lardbucket wrote:... too late, I fear. England following the USA down the sluice.

I wasn’t in favour of Scottish independence back in the day but since Brexit I think the UK is probably a lost cause as a political union, and I want my dual passport as well!

I was referring only to the immense sexual pleasure she will undoubtedly have derived from Boris' demise, not a belief that she would have an ecstatic misapprehension that this would lead to or even facilitate Scottish independence.

Well, maybe the more damage she does, the sooner it will be over and we can rebuild under someone sensible. Bring on the IMF…

I love UK politics - it makes me less cynical about our politicians.

Seems like everyone expected Liz Truss to kill off pensioners.
But no one thought she'd start at the top.

People are already warning her off going anywhere near David Attenborough, but saying Rupert Murdoch would be OK.JGK wrote:Seems like everyone expected Liz Truss to kill off pensioners.

Re: UK politics thread (II)
Well, I thought the Truss government might be ideologically nastier than the previous Tory iteration. Not for a moment, though, did I think it would make Boris Johnson look like the model of competence and common sense by comparison!
She and her sidekick Kami-Kwazi are seemingly poking the financial market crocodile with a stick until it eats our nation’s collective wealth whole, while saying everyone who disagrees with them is “anti-growth”. You couldn’t make it up.

Brexit is the elephant in the room that no one wants to mention. Any country would face economic
meltdown if they mindlessly erected barriers with our 2 biggest trading partners plus 1 part of
the UK. It takes time before people will accept theyve been fooled, lied to and taken for charlies.

Yeah, the easiest way to add a few percentage points to growth would be to rejoin the European single market… but even Labour won’t touch that idea with a bargepole for the foreseeable future.

Jeremy Qunt seems to have calmed the markets and the political mood a bit by reversing most of the Kami-Kwasi budget, but still unclear what that means for his now lame duck boss…

Re: UK politics thread (II)
So, today we’ve had a Home Secretary quit, a Chief Whip and deputy possibly or possibly not resign, and a chaotic vote on fracking with MPs reportedly physically manhandled outside the lobby and a U-turn on whether the vote was compulsory for Tory members.
Just a usual day in our politics, then.
