Special K's v, I dunno, M&Ms, in the dubs final, Like all half-decent Oz doubles pairings of the last 30 years at least, both have well-matched names (eg Macs, Woodies).
Ash thru to the final where her opponent will be American Danielle Collins, who is the partner of Tom Couch, also her trainer, who played 3 games for Melbourne and is the son of the late Paul

Re: Australian Open Tennis
Tennis is a bit shit most of the time, except (in my case) when an Aussie wins a Grand Slam Final.
In this case it was the sweet and charming Ash Barty. She breezed through the 1st set but the American girl had her on the ropes at 1-5 in the 2nd. Ash reeled of 4 games straight to level at 5-5. Collins regrouped to go to 6-5 but Ash took it to the tiebreak, which she ran away with.
It's a moment many Aussies will never forget. 1st time on 40 years since an Aussie lady won the thing.
And no better champ than Ash.

Re: Australian Open Tennis
She played well. Collins’ concession speech after her heartbreaking second set loss showed her to be an admirable person. She has a strong game, especially on the backhand, and I hope she will make and win other finals.
The post match ‘celebration’ complete with stubbies being cracked (and advertised) by TV anchors was a bad look.

and now she's 1 US Open away from having won all 4 major titles. (non-calendar year Grand Slam I guess)

With the French already guaranteed as long as he can walk, Djokovic will go to Wimbledon with work to do.

Re: Australian Open Tennis
Back to cricket?
Big blow for the women’s tour as she was becoming the big star that was really needed. Who’s left, the troubled Osaka, the 95-year-old Williams sisters, and a bunch of Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians who might be absent for political reasons soon. And Raducanu, who’s looking like a one-hit wonder right now (as presumably is her opponent in that final last year…)

Re: Australian Open Tennis
The carnage of the 2023 Open continues with a one-legged Nadal barely competitive against a gentleman called McKenzie McDonald (think I got that the right way round).
With Djoko a set-to-set proposition, Kyrgios crocked, Alcatraz crocked, Fed retired, Ash retired,, her next-in-line Alja crocked, Osaka next stage back from retired, the field in both events is thin bordering on anorexic.

The are many missing but also I once seemed to know the majority of tennis players in the men's and women's draw but to me most of them are semi-anonymous now.

Might as well give the title to Novak now.

Yeah, he only has to stay upright basically. Great effort from metal-hipped Murray to last out two five-set marathons though, including another home hope in the Kokk. He might yet be Novax’s toughest test, even though they’re in the same half of the draw so we won’t get the old Sunday morning of false hope as per a decade or so ago…

Re: Australian Open Tennis
A real bunch of nonentities remain in both singles tournaments, including several from Russia and Belarus, not a great look for the sport.
I really think Djokovic could finally do the Grand Slam this year if Nadal isn’t fully fit for the French. Though the US does tend to be the unpredictable one when everyone’s at the end of a long season.

People love to hate Novak but the expert opinion appears to be that he's the most complete tennis player ever.

The Joker is clearly holding a grudge for the time he flouted the quarantine rules and rightly got booted out of the country. Poor baby.

No-Vax brushes aside the Yank nonentity to reach a final against choker Shitsipas. Title number 10 guaranteed then.
Meanwhile, in the women’s final, a Belarusian faces a Kazakh-Russian. Words fail me, will Putin be the VIP guest?

No man currently aged under 35 has won the Aussie Open, French Open or Wimbledon.
That’s the age you qualify for invitational veterans doubles piss-abouts, in theory…

Djokovic out. This is the first Oz Open since 2005 that won’t feature one of The Big Three in its finale.
