Aravinda could bat anywhere the mans a legend I tells ye!!!
Ponting was at 6 in PJ's original team!!!
That's a lesbians view on things!
Ponting batted as low as 7 in the 90's so it's not unfeasible he could do a job at 6.

Four number 11's, but meh. I know Warne was brilliant in the 00's as well as the 90's, but I assume I can't select him for both teams.

Didn't rate Azhar much, Doremi? In the 90's there few few who could match him when on song.

Ponting of the 90's against De Silva? Are you turning into tac??

That is a quality side, Flower batting at 7 behind the god that is De Silva. I like that!
Although I think Gooch for one of the openers for definate.

No. I've already said who I'd go for a few pages back - either Aravinda or David Boon - who I think is underrated.

No doubt De Silva was a fine, fine player, but I think there may have been a few middle order bats who were just a bit better than him.

I think Doremi's 90's side would be the one I'd select, but with Gooch and then any of three openers! Probably Kirsten though!

Re: Best side for each decade.
It depends. Statistically, Gooch would be there. He averaged 52 over a 45-50 match period. Taylor would be my other choice as he was more consistant than Slats - then I'd be forgetting Anwar. So, it's not straighforward.
As for the middle order, it depends who you're playing up top - because three of numbers 3-6 would be, unequivocally, Lara, Tendulkar and Steve Waugh.

Azhar, Ganguly (Averaged mid 50's in the 90's), M.Waugh....

No, I wouldn't say either Waugh Jnr., or Ganguly were better than De Silva in the 90s. A case can be made for Inzi and Azhar though. Also Kirsten is there because I really liked to watch him bat and not many other openers stood out.

Aye, the choice would be between the three lefties definately.
I agree those three fill the middle order berths, and then I would Have Aravinda over JNR Waugh, Ganguly FFS??, INZI etc...

Re: Best side for each decade.
I'll start with the most recently completed decade - the 90's:
1. Graham Gooch
2. Saeed Anwar
3. Brian Lara
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Steve Waugh
6. Aravinda De Silva
7. Ian Healy (w/k)
8. Wasim Akram
9. Shane Warne
10. Curtley Ambrose
11. Glenn McGrath
I think Gooch's record in the 90's earns him one of the opening slots. Obviously the second place isn't so straight forward. Kirsten, Slater and Taylor all have claims on the spot but Saeed always seemed the classiest to me.
The only other spots up for discussion in my book are Aravinda and Wasim. I know some people will plump for Donald but I think it's a case of him missing out in a decade when there were so many great fast bowlers. Wasim is also a left-armer who can bat a bit, making him more valuable to the team.
Obviously Lara, Tendulkar and Waugh stand out as the batsmen of the 90's, but after that I feel Aravinda's the next cab off the rank. He was consistent while still being aggressive.

Re: Best side for each decade.
By the way, if you're good enough to make teams in two different decades then you should be picked in the teams for two different decades.
The only criteria I would put on it is that you have to play for more than half the decade ie. six years.

Re: Best side for each decade.
Well, I'd agree with you but I dont - it doesn't have to be a Wasim v Donald issue IMO.
Make your case for McGrath instead of both of these.

Re: Best side for each decade.
I just thought if we're picking the same player in two different decades it'd make it less interesting when judging them against each other at the end.
An aside - is there any player that would make 3 different decades? I doubt it but still.

Re: Best side for each decade.
Doubtful. Hobbs would be closest I reckon. He played in the 00's, but not much.
I'd surmise that he was top scorer at the best average in the 10's and 20's.
