'Tim Bresnan is just a fat pie-eating County trundler who would not be out of place plying his trade with the Derbyshire triumvirate of gash' ... any number of English supporters

'Bell is a malteser-balled belfish waste of space and oxygen' ... Merlin, holcs, etc

Yes, a few here (mainly English fans) thought he'd be rubbish. TAYPOC, even.

If he takes loads of wickets I'll have to revise my opinion that he's a good batsman whose bowling really just presents him with the opportunity of a career-ending injury; and eat any amount of hat.

I meant Shane Watson as a Bad Call more in the "Yes, No, Sorry...." sense.

"England won't take 20 wickets once in the Ashes."

Bad call, me. Although, technically right as they haven't taken 20 wickets once.

Not that I could have known Australia's batting line-up would include two tailenders in the top six, The Artist Formerly Known as Ponting and Michael "The New Malteser Balls" Clarke.

It's been asked before why teams don't put their worst bats in early to take the shine off the ball before letting the better bats have a go.

I think Australia has answered that this series.

It comes to something where we could lend you Monty Panesar and he'd improve your batting and bowling. And fielding.

Gautam Gambhir. And I couldn't be happier.

And now that I've woofed him, he'll probably get out tomorrow in the first ball he faces.

I watched a fair bit of Dirk Wellham prior to his selection for NSW. Was totally convinced he'd be a near great.

You didn't specify how near, so that's one you can easily wriggle out of.

Is there a good call thread?

I've been saying for the last two years amidst calls for Cook's sacking that he will be opening our batting for the next 10 years and will come good.

Yes, wonder if you can include Ian Bell support in a good thread. Plenty of derision over the last few years from Dan, Holcs & Merlin. The boys coming good.

chuckle.

In the context of contemporary batting averages I would have been expecting, say, 53.0.

The thread winner will be when Oz win this thing and square the series.

I was one of those who said "David WHO?" when Saker was appointed.

1) Hadn't done my homework

2) Has been greatly influential, I think. Look what the Pom seamers have achieved, and only three at a time, with the Kookaburra, on Oz wickets. The technical side and the confidence side (bouncebackability included).

Do you think Saker will be as influential when we tour the subcontinent next Winter Pete?

I have no way of knowing, especially whether he will wave a wand purely technically, in famously difficult conditions.

I imagine though that he will work minor wonders on their "integrity" (in the sense of perspective, "philosophy" and confidence beyond the ball-to-ball existence - if you see what I mean. Getting hit for a couple of fours is not a disaster if you know what you are doing, are resourceful and cunning enough to keep at it - and especially if those boundaries are scored at a level of risk.)

Or probably already has done so.

Exactly right Peter. Getting hit for 20 odd in boundaries down the ground or through cover when pitching the ball up with slips & gully is worth conceding to get the edge ... which they will. Patience is the key

Far better than conceding 60+ being cut or pulled by bowling short and wide ..... dropping short should be the surprise ball to make 'em hurry up and p'raps mistime the shot.
