On February 11th 1908 Australia regained the Ashes with a 308 run victory, so we'd probably still be going on about that.

Re: 100 years ago
Notts resume tomorrow on 72/5, but i'm confident Yorkshire can win with 189 in the bank on a sticky. Especially with Georgie Hirst just 6 victims short of 1950 FC wickets and young Wilf Rhodes in such fine form. That 'Kolpak' from Lincolnshire Hawke better buck his ideas up though.

That game should've been in the Olympics. The 08 games went for 6 months, and county teams would have been just as representative of the 'teams' at the 1900 Paris Games.

"This continual whinging by Queenslanders for a place in the Sheffield Shield really is a bit much. They wouldn't win the damned trophy in my lifetime, and one of their much-trumpeted pineapple trees is about as likely to produce bananas as Queensland is to produce a bona-fide international cricketer.

Lara Lara Laughs wrote:Is WG Grace's girth cheaping Test cricket?
Grace had played his last Test in June 1899. He played his final & 870th fc game for The Gentlemen of England against Surrey at The Oval in a season warm-up match in April 1908, three months short of his 60th birthday. WG had retired from competitive cricket at the end of the 1904 season when he played his last game for London County at the age of 56 and since then had been on an extended Sinatra-style farewell tour appearing for invitatation XIs against various county and touring opponents. Although only one match it marked his 45th season in fc cricket.
Jack Hobbs, who was to overtake Grace's record aggregate number of centuries (126) 18 years later made his fc debut for Surrey, playing against Grace, in the same fixture 3 years earlier and also played in Grace's last match. Grace retired to Mottingham in Kent and died in the middle of a WWI Zeppelin raid in October 1915.

Although the site for the new Australian federal capital, the first specially-built capital since Washington DC in the 1780s, was chosen in 1908 the name was not used until 1913. Until then it was known simply as "Federal Capital Territory". The government did not move into the new capital until 1927, Melbourne acting as the capital in the meantime.
Canberra
The first 1-day match, that I can find, between a PM's XI and a touring side at the Manuka Oval took place on 8 December 1954 with Len Hutton's side as the opponents and Bob Menzies picking the home side, the English narrowly winning with May & Benaud (opening!) both posting centuries and Hutton taking 3-15 with his legbreaks:

Except Tests were then played over 3 days in England and were timeless in Australia and South Africa. 5 days only became the norm for Ashes matches in England after Warwick Armstrong's complaints following the 1921 tour of when he considered Australia had been denied a second consecutive whitewash (following their 5-0 victory at home the previous winter) by the 3-day rule. 5 days only became the norm for all sides in England in 1950.

skully wrote:Is betting on cricket starting to corrupt the game?
In 1908 betting on cricket would have been considerably frowned upon, I should imagine, although many cricketers gambled away their benefit money in the pavilion. In the 18th century, however, it is reckoned that more money was placed on cricket matches than on the result of horse races. The complexity of the cricket scorecard owes its existence to the need to settle wagers.
