Except Tests were then played over 3 days in England and were timeless in Australia and South Africa. 5 days only became the norm for Ashes matches in England after Warwick Armstrong's complaints following the 1921 tour of when he considered Australia had been denied a second consecutive whitewash (following their 5-0 victory at home the previous winter) by the 3-day rule. 5 days only became the norm for all sides in England in 1950.
I think the 1926 Ashes tests were all 3-day encounters as well. Except the Oval, which was timeless.
A cunning ploy by Eng to get back the Ashes no doubt.
In 1930 I think the Ashes tests were 4-days long.

Yes to the above, 1934 & 1938 series were 4-day affairs too. First 5-day Ashes series in England was the Invincibles' tour in 1948.

thank you for the clarifications from Embee and JGK...admit to great confusion about my actual birth year and date - this was not helped by the dreadful, imposition of the pagan christian calendar.
