Re: Celebrity Death List MMXI / The Death Thread 2011
WideWally wrote:Peter Loader has died aged 81. He was one of an outstanding band of English pace bowlers back in the 50s & would have played many more tests in another era. He played 13 tests for England taking 39 wickets @ 22.51. In first class cricket he took 1326 wickets @ 19.04 & was a member of the great Surrey teams that won many championships back then.

7 on the trot, Wal, from 1952 to 1958 inclusive. The Surrey side of the 1950s, which included May, Bedser, Laker, Lock, MacIntyre the wicketkeeper, Loader himself as well as Kenny Barrington and Mickey Stewart in the later period must rank, along with the Victorian
side of the 1920s and the Barbados sides of the 1950s and 1960s as one of the strongest non-Test sides in history. Mickey Stewart must be the only remaining survivor of those who played regularly in the championship-winning teams.
Loader would have played many more Tests had he not had to compete with Trueman, Statham, Tyson and Bedser. He was the 7th England bowler to take a Test hat-trick which he did against the West Indies at Headingley in 1957. It was to be 38 years before the feat was repeated by another England bowler when Dominic Cork achieved it against the same side at Old Trafford in 1995.

Laughing at death is generally pretty courageous, I'd have thought.
Laughing at (other people's) deaths may appear ghoulish in some cases.
Laughing at someone's incongruous choices for a death watch is a leetle beetle different - you no theenkie?
Ya wanna get yer lines and yer logic a bit straighter, mate. Or are you deliberately pillorying yourself for public entertainment?

Former US Sec. of State karks it
"LOS ANGELES, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Former U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher, who served three presidents died Friday due to complications from kidney and bladder cancer. He was 85.
Christopher died at his home in Los Angeles and was surrounded by his family, the family said in a statement. He is survived by his wife and four children from two marriages."

Couple of Christophers on the list but no Warren Christopher.

Any chance of a cruise missile striking Al-Megrahi? Whilst any man's death diminishes me, as Donne preached, his demise at the hands of Coalition forces might strike some as rough justice.

Do I get a half point for pointing out that Liz and Fred were both born in 1932 (Fred being some 9 months younger though)? The great man is surely worthy of a musical tribute. Apologies for the strong language:

I think the current format is a bit unfair ... the thread originator has an obvious advantage. Would be better if it went, somehow, in rounds, or if everyone was able to select whoever they want regardless of whether someone else has picked them (which is how it is in general deadpools.)

Phurt. First in best dressed, and it's not as if the early birds can pick millions of old fogies (6 picks out of 7 billion people doesn't really crimp others' style). Interestingly, all three nominators who are off the mark are in the 2nd half of those who got their noms in i.e. they got in later than 50% of the rest.
