No Ashes at Headingly in 2013 or 2015
Yorkshire will not bid for Ashes Test
Shame.
Apparently something happened there in 1981...not sure of the details...probably nothing of worth.
Headingley will not host an Ashes Test in 2013 or 2015 after Yorkshire chairman and chief executive, Colin Graves, said it would represent too great a financial risk.
Shame.

Well if they can't make money out of an Ashes test

It's not that they can't make money on the actual game..... there are now 9 test venues in England & Wales and 7 tests which means you have to bid.
Yorkshire can't afford to lose money on the bid. They lost a million on the Pak/Aus game last year.

Looks like they are scared they can't show a profit.
They bet on the wrong team?

Damn, I saw the title on the front page - No Ashes at Head...
I hoped it was going to say Headquarters.

Well, it's the nickname for the place - I was hoping we would just shun the place.

Pah.... tis an excellent venue and a cracking atmosphere. Just because its a bit more cultured than you north of Watford types expect eh?

Bar last time, we've been dicked most times. It should tell us something.
Re: No Ashes at Headingly in 2013 or 2015
I would have thought they could guarantee a full house for an Ashes test on most days meaning they could have a good idea about how much to bid. To not even try is pretty lame.

(and it's not like Yorkshiremen are tight or anything)

Tactical decision. Mitchell Johnson can only bowl there and at Perth. Takes him cleverly out of the equation.
Unless they're planning on playing a game at Perth. Then it's a crazy decision, made by monkeys, which I mostly don't approve of.

I agree, they'd be mad to play at Perth. Is there even a cricket ground there, and how many Scots would turn out to watch England anyway?

Whilst looking through the allocations I noticed that we are only playing 3 tests against SA in 2012. FFS.

Aye, noticed that too. Must be the shortest series we've played them in since readmission... I think the 1994 series may have been 3 tests.

Lots of counties other than Yorkshire have shown spectacular losses during 2010. It will be a surprise if all 18 counties are still in business in five years time.

And 4 against the Snoozers? That would be crazy. SA has to be the second biggest series for England these days, and generally in recent years the most closely contested.vilkrang wrote:Whilst looking through the allocations I noticed that we are only playing 3 tests against SA in 2012. FFS.
So, along with Lord's and the Oval which grounds will get the other three Ashes Tests? Hope it's the traditional grounds, particularly Trent Bridge and Edgbaston, but can see one or two of the relative newcomers wanting to make a statement.
(Edit: WI is the other series that summer not NZ, and it appears to be 3 Tests each. And we seem to have 5 stupid JAMODIs against Australia instead of the 7th Test of the summer. )

This could be the classic win - win situation. Australia won't have to play at Headingley, and the Yorkies will have something (no Test) to whinge about, and to wax nostalgically about. Apparently they enjoy that sort of thing?
More seriously ... I suppose we'll have to play in Cardiff, Durham, or Southampton then?

What a shame
AUS/PAK match last year was brilliant, possibly the best test match of the entire year.
