Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
The pundits seem to be suggesting he's better than Tevez in terms of skill but perhaps not quite giving the same sort of work rate, their scoring records are fairly similar.

Anyone want Joey Barton for free?
I suppose he could mow the lawn, do some odd jobs around the house...
What are Newcastle playing at?

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
Good start for all the promoted teams in fact. Last year's three were all at least in play-off contention and one of them (Norwich) went up again. Shows that sometimes after a club has stagnated in the Championship, going down then back up can revitalise them.
The customary opening day 0-0 draw for Forest. Lack of firepower could be an issue for the season I think.

Chelsea agree a deal for Romelu Lukaku, 18.
Superstar in the making, or another Emile Heskey whose phenomenal strength and physique at a young age made him stand out among his peers, but never really lived up to the hype once the grown ups started to play?
Time will tell.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
Will be tough for him to make an immediate impact with the strikers they have on the books. Suspect he could end up being loaned out before he establishes himself. Given your description of him I guess they see him as an eventual successor to Drogba?

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
He's been touted as the New Drogba since he made his debut for Anderlecht at 16. He's a big boy. 6' 4". Quick. Skilful.
And he's been scoring Champions League and Europa League goals from the get go - and already has a couple of international goals for Belgium - so I don't think they're going to stick him in the reserves for a couple of seasons.
I suppose it depends on how Villas Boas intends to line Chelsea up. If it's just one striker with two wide forwards, Lukaku would seem unlikely to get much of a look in, behind Torres and Drogba and possibly Sturridge.
But if they go two up, he and Sturridge would understudy Torres and Drogba and probably play quite a lot of minutes.
Who knows? In any case, Drogba's only got a season or so left at the top level, I imagine, so that's him replaced for next season already.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
If they don't play two up they're wasting a fair bit of talent... are the "wide forwards" really of the same quality? Malouda, when he wants to be... Kalou, not really... Anelka, his best season at Chelsea was when he was playing as the main man with Drogba missing a lot of the time. I suppose they could use one of their main strikers in a wider position as they have done with Anelka already.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
City 2-0 up at half-time after United dominated possession. Dodgy start from De Gea, was always going to be tough for a young keeper coming into this situation.

FFS:
90+4: GOAL - NANI! What drama! United have surely won it now! Kompany should clear on halfway but he dithers and Nani nicks the ball off his toes. He advances on Hart, sidesteps the City goalkeeper and slides home. Incredible.
