Bruno Giordano?
Ciro Ferrara?
Alessandro Renica?
Giuseppe Bruscolotti?
Francesco Romano?
With Ottavio Bianchi as their manager?
Oh yeah, SHIT players. Whatta one man team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHIT PLAYERS!!!!!!!!!!
And Careca and Zola too. Maradona's romanticised as much as Zizou. They're both ATGs without all the misty eyed bullsh*t around them. I've always been suspicious of how long Diego was juiced up for as well, given that drug testing wouldn't have been as rigorous or sophisticated as it is today. They say it was WC '94 only and brush it under the carpet but who knows.
Hi merlo, vilks, dan btw. Hope you're all well.

Re: The Football Thread - 2011/12
The 1994 World Cup was the first one I ever watched, can remember being only 9 and properly into it (largely due to a pretty cool teacher who taught us about it to help us with geography), stayed up untill god knows what time watching the final and wanted Brazil to win so that was cool.
Obviously I had no knowledge of Maradonna previous to this tournament so just saw this utter nutcase who everybody seemed very excited about. Thinking back I don't think I've enjoyed a world cup as much since then, probably due to England not being there and pissing me off. Plenty of memorable moments too, even though I was 9 I still have more memories of that World Cup than any other and despite being only 9 I appreciated how funny Diana Ross's miss during the opening ceremony was.
At this point I also thought that penalty shootouts were awesome and exciting. This stopped some time during 1996, despite still liking them less than a week before...

I love penos. Complete agony to watch if your team is involved though.
In other news - come on Athletic!
They've got some quality players and a legend of a coach. Ander Herrera, Iker Muniain and Javi Martinez will be top players (and probs snapped up). Llorente already is.

Unless you are German. Not only have they not lost a shootout since 1976, I think they've only missed one penalty, either during a shootout or open play since then. Which is ridiculous, and baiscally means that England manage to miss more penalties in the space of ten minutes every time they step up than Germany have missed for 36 years.Lara Lara Laughs wrote:I love penos. On the subject of Maradona, obviously he did use drugs, but mostly recreational ones which would not have been performance enhancing, and in any case I've not yet heard of the drug that gives you fantastic skills with the ball at your feet...
Nobody is saying the players he had alongside him at Napoli or with Argentina were bad players, but they weren't world class players of their generation like Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas, Villa etc.

Name a player who isn't... Messi has even scored a similar one with his hand I seem to remember!
The worst thing about Barcelona is their diving, the likes of Busquets could give Tom Daley a run for his money.

Careca and Zola weren't in the Scudetto winning side of '86, that's what I thought we were on about. But if we're on about 86-90 you could add Giovanni Francini and Massimo Crippa. Really good little period. Remember them winning the UEFA.
Hope you're well too Laz... good to see you on here.

Footballers are coached to cheat. Actually, on field cheating, along with racism, is one of the biggest problems facing football.

On the evidence of tonight, looks like the top Premier League clubs are going to have to do some serious spending this summer. It's like going back 15 years or so, seeing their European struggles this season against sides who are some way below the best of the best.

Europa League? City and Man U could hardly give less of a f*ck. The Premiership is now their main goal, and they know they'll qualify for the Champions League again next season on the basis of their guaranteed top four finishes.

The one trophy Ferguson has never won? Chance to show Europe they haven't gone away? Chance to put one over on their city rivals, for both sides?
If they didn't give a shit they would have played the kids and not risked their big players for the title race.

Thing is, Xavi and Iniesta are god like, all time great players, but Messi is still visibly head and shoulders above both them. Tells you something.

No it's not. Not having this debate again though. It's on this thread somewhere.

I could have sworn I made the point about there not being a performance enhancing drug that makes footballers more skillful before beamer, but it appears I haven't.
I think it's another one of those times where I thought it but didn't post it, but thought that I posted it.

Messi is a fantastic player, but he needs to take Argentina to a World Cup victory to truly convince some people he's better than Maradona. He was pretty ordinary in the last World Cup. Went missing, really.

I think people forget he's only 24 sometimes. Most footballers enjoy their peak years in their late 20s. The fact he is even being mentioned alongside the likes of Maradonna at the age of 24 speaks volumes.Henry wrote:Lara Lara Laughs wrote:beamer wrote:On the subject of Maradona, obviously he did use drugs, but mostly recreational ones which would not have been performance enhancing, and in any case I've not yet heard of the drug that gives you fantastic skills with the ball at your feet...

Really hope he stays injury free throughout his career.
