England think Hotspot's a bit crap...
http://www.espncricinfo.com/england-v-india-2011/content/current/story/525382.html
At this rate, we'll be back to just referring run-outs and stumpings in a few months.
And some might say that's not such a bad thing...

... and LBWs when it pitches outside leg stump or clearly hits the bat on the way through
I'm sure I recall someone suggesting something similar years ago

For snick catches and relevant LBs: Snicko. simples.

Stat quiz question:
When was the last time two successive days of a Test ended on the same score from different teams?
(No, I don't know the answer. )

Not simples. As mentioned a million times, it takes a while to build the 'snicko' - probably about an over or two.
And it's merely a visual aid for the viewer as the sound waves and images are synchronised by a mere video engineer, who can make the outcome look like anything he wants to.
Re: England v India, 2nd Test, Trent Bridge, 29 Jul-2 Aug, 2011
Wow - a hattrick. Well done StuBo.
I ran out of puff as Dravid and Fat Boy Yuvi seemed to be building a big lead for India. But seems Broadaxe had other ideas.

Regarding snicko, Dellboy is correct, it is open to easy manipulation.Dello wrote:PeterCS wrote:For snick catches and relevant LBs: Snicko. simples.

Funnily enough, so is the 'mat' image which can easily be tweaked by a few pixels, or moved slightly by a mere video engineer.
And I reckon hotspot struggles with edges that only get the corner of the bat, as opposed to the whole side of the bat.

Aye, it was an excellent spell from him skulls. That said, he was a bit fortunate ..... second wicket (Bhaji) got a huge inside edge first, and the LBW was actually a real howler.
Talk about a face like a slapped arse when he realised he'd been sawn off & couldn't review it .........

I've always thought it must be easy to add or take away a few cms from the animated images of the stumps that hawkeye uses. There were a couple of LBW referrals in Brisbane in the ashes that I swear must have been out, but hawkeye had them going over the top.

It would be possible to manipulate hawkeye, but given that it works with a bunch of computer subroutines talking to each other, I suspect that manipulating it would involve some sort of ubergeek slaving away over a keyboard, which might be a giveaway in a tv control room.

Cheers Growls. Yeah, have now seen the highlights. PMSL @ Bhajji for being sawn off during the HT. And doubly funny because of the Bannies refusal to allow LBWs to be referred.Growler wrote:Aye, it was an excellent spell from him skulls. My main beef with Hawkeye is that it invariably predicts a straight path of flight in the side-on shot, or in profile if you wish, instead of a bit of a parabolic arc, meaning that it always seems to predict higher impact spots on the stumps (or indeed showing it going over). Espesh on this TB wicket, the ball should be shown dying just a bit before it reaches the stumps.Zat wrote:It would be possible to manipulate hawkeye, but given that it works with a bunch of computer subroutines talking to each other, I suspect that manipulating it would involve some sort of ubergeek slaving away over a keyboard, which might be a giveaway in a tv control room.

I don't think hawk eye should be used for predictive stuff, nobody can say for sure how accurate it might be compared to a human.
I do think it should be used for where the ball pitched, and for point of impact, I reckon it would be harder to manipulate, and probably more accurate than the pitch mat.

Indeed. You've only got to look at what a ball often does after passing the stumps. It often swings either way at the last minute. Who's to say it couldn't do a little of that after the spot that it strikes the pad (if the batsman wasn't standing there, if you know what I mean).
Let the umpire do the predicting based on confirmation of pitching spot and striking spot i.e. his first gut-feel is "that's out" but he just gets confirmation of where the ball pitched and where it strikes the pad.

And here's another way to ensure referrals only get used for howlers. Remove the ability of the umpires on the field to go upstairs. Let them make their decision. Then if one team feels sufficiently aggrieved by it, the players can refer it.
It would speed things up, it would mean the farcical situation where bowlers can send down no-balls and not get called for them, until they get an edge, then the ump goes for the referral, goes out the window, and there would be far less undermining of the umps.

Lead with only 2 wickets down. Think I might just about have taken that when India were going strong at 4 down .

FOHL is in the form of his life.
IRB has made more runs in this innings than in all of his previous 6 innings in TB Tests combined (incl. the 1st innings of this match). His highest score at 3 is 92 v. the Paksters at Lahore in November 2005.

This is some innings by Bell. Batting at 3, coming in at 6-1 at dusk, tricky conditions, Test match in the balance and he's scoring quickly.
