Re: Picture Quiz 8: "Whirled Cricket"
Wally - You are cleaning up again.
Even most of your triple question marks are correct.
Correct so far:
1, 3, 5-8, 10-12, 14,16, 18,19, 21-26, 28, 29, 31, 33 & 34. (Twenty-four correct, I think (!) ).
2: very warm
15, no
20 - very warm, if you meant David.
Still blanks: 4, 13, 17, 27, 30,32, 35. (9 is cancelled - see above!)

- Spoiler:
- Congrats on spotting the identity of 8 & 34, though years apart and completely different in all "superficialities", but not in action or fizzog!

Ahhh, I looked at Wally's answers to find my mystery man! I wouldn't have guessed that, even though 222-2 often talked about him.
35 is baffling me. As is the tall dude in 27.

Jill:
35, like 15, is credited with the invention (or at least use) of a particular type of delivery.
17 was in every sense "a character", and a warbler and whistler (in the field).

Wally - no to 15 and 17.
- Spoiler:
- 17 may have had Indian connections - I am not sure - but he was Victorian through and through. Though (far) more eccentric than most.

Wally - right on 20. That makes 27, I think (??).
Jill now has four others, and Lardy had one or two more IIRC.
So only three names still to be identified by anyone, I think: 17, 15 and 35. (See recent clues?)

Re: Picture Quiz 8: "Whirled Cricket"
... and Wally claims the last three!
The error I made - the terrible truth can now be told, is that I was under the impression that Ian Meckiff (9) was an Underwood-type bowler. It seems he wasn't. Perhaps the impression came from the fact that most of the other "suspects" during that phase (Lock, Burke ...) WERE spinners. (And then along came Charlie Griffith, and off it went again ...)
But it's also lack of knowledge on my part. It seems that however old you are, you are never old enough for a cricket quiz.
aka: always check all your facts scrupulously ,,,, *sigh*

Re: Picture Quiz 8: "Whirled Cricket"
Ah yes - 27 hasn't been identified yet - not even by Wally.
Look at the limbs. Estimate the era, and the country.
Clue: One of those spinners who developed the yips. "He could really have been a player." But he still ended up with a decent little Test average of 46 wkts @ 28. And was a deadly fielder, too.

A tall West Indian from the 70s? Was there one? Was he also a batsman?
I'll edit to say clearly not the 70s, then!

80s, Jill. Yes, he could bat a bit - forcefully. But was more a bowler who could bat a bit (and field a lot), whereas his contemporary cool Carl Hooper was a batsman who could bowl a bit (and field quite a lot too).
And Wally has got him!
And Wally has got him!
