Just "swarthy", I suppose! (answering your query on 17 none too helpfully! )

Re: Picture Quiz 8: "Whirled Cricket"
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
As I said "at the top", quiz apart, there are some interesting actions there. And "interesting" actions, in three or four cases.
And some of the players repay a bit of reading-up.
Such as Ian Meckiff, for example ..... (*sigh again*)
I'll post up the answers, maybe with a comment or two - e.g. on 15 - in a day or two.

Baz: Very well done, esp if you didn't check the spoilers!
The only ones you didn't get are 17 (not Indian - see clues in posts above), and the #9, which I withdrew as I had included it in error. That too is explained in a post further up.
So 33/35 (or rather, 33/34) - a platinum award for you!
Except I have no platinum. Will plutonium do? Looks nice on a badge.
And Dello/Seinfeld's soup. Plenty of it.

I just told my bf about this quiz and how I'd struggled with WI spinners. He said 'Oh, the only ones I can think of are Ramadhin, Valentine, Gibbs and Harper.'
I've sent him the link!

LOL.
If that's what he DOESN'T know very much about, he must be intolerable when he actually knows something

Apparently he had a Lance Gibbs coaching video as a kid. Cute. The others are encyclopedic cricketing knowledge. I usually know more than him, but he had me there. When I quizzed him on old-time Aussies, he got them too. O'Reilly, Benaud, Grimmett.

Re: Picture Quiz 8: "Whirled Cricket"
Cricket heaven sounds heavenly. Think of the teas.
I'd go mad if I couldn't talk about cricket with someone. It's possibly how we knew we were 'meant to be' (ick). We bonded over cricket questions in our Uni residence's pub quiz and together we bemoaned the lack of Sky to watch the winter tours.
Our shared fondness for Graham Thorpe's batting was instrumental in the early days.
Romantic or wot.

I am glad you added "..'s batting" in there.
Or you might have found a problem emerging somewhere further down the line ...
No "ick" as far as I am concerned (whatever anyone else on this supertough forum may say ). As long as you keep your head on, romance and love are good.

Re: Picture Quiz 8: "Whirled Cricket"
Here is a full set of answers.
I've added quite a few links (mainly youtube, it's true) where I can find them. Many of them are well worth a look, I think, esp 12, 13 (the song and background), 21 (not only ...) and 33 (historical footage, interviews)
But ignore this labour of love if you just need the names.

- Spoiler:
- 1- Bill (Tiger) O'Reilly. Aus LBG. 27 Tests, 144 wkts @ 22.5.
Did not get on well with the Don, but didn't "piss on statues".
2/30 - Saqlain Mushtaq PAK OB. 208 Test wkts. Here in his lean and beardless early years.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mqqpLtmLTM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLbe9pF05-E&feature=related
30: S Fleming LBW (Moin Khan keeper), Auckland, March 2001.
3 - Bishen Bedi, IND SLA. 266 Test wkts between 1966 and 1979.
One of the "spin quartet". Characteristic leisurely walk-in rather than run-up.
4/31 - Danny Vettori, NZ SLA . 345 Test wkts.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzH7o5U4Rfc&feature=related
4: Sehwag c B McCullum b Flying Vettori, Napier March 2009.
5 - Clarrie Grimmett Aus LBG. 37 Tests, 216 wkts @ 24
Some footage here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq61tKRjkJA
6 - Lance Gibbs. WI OB. 309 Test wkts @ 29. Unlucky that he was often asked to fill in between quicks on unhelpful Caribbean wkts of the time. Light on his feet, spidery limbs and action (long hands!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_j1BvNuTgw
7 - Abdul Qadir PAK LBG. 236 Test wkts. Revived the art of legspin/googly variations. When in form unplayable.) Look at the precise fingerwork!)
8, 34 - Bhagwath Chandrasekhar IND LBG, 242 Test wkts (Two photos taken some years apart - but note the identical arm positions, and the thinness of that right arm, affected by polio from birth.)
(9 - Ian Meckiff. Oops! has no place here. See note in thread.)
10 - Tony Lock Eng S/MLA, 174 test wkts @ 25.5. No balled for throwing when using his fast ball.
11 - Johan Botha SAf OB. More a successful T20 specialist than a Test player. Like Lock, pulled up for "throwing", had to redesign his action.
12 - Sonny Ramadhin WI OB & variations 158 Test wkts @ 29 (arm looks unusual here, but apparently straight on delivery!), and
13 - Alf Valentine WI SLA. 139 Test wkts @ 30
"Those two little friends of mine", who defeated England in 1950.

14 - Anil Kumble IND LBG. 619 Test wkts @ just under 30. )Here vs Aus Bangalore 2008)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJW_nzfNAMU < early on!
Includes footage of the Spin Quarter of the 60s/70s.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbolYMnKsh8&feature=related
15 - Bernard Bosanquet Eng LBG, 25 Test wkts @ 24. Credited with invention of the googly as a variation/addition to legspin.
16 - Paul Adams SAf SLAC, 134 Test wkts. A one-off.
17 - "Chuck" Fleetwood-Smith Aus SLAC, 42 Test wkts. A different sort of one-off, uneven performances, entertainer, amazing character. Not The Don's sort of guy.
17's nickname is unconnected with:
18 - Muttiah Muralitharan, SL OB/D etc. Also needs no introduction.
19 - Derek Underwood, Eng S/MLA. 297 Test wkts @ under 26. "Deadly".
20 - Fred Titmus, Eng OB. 153 Test wkts. Humorist, long-serving. Survived the loss of toes in a boating accident. Died 2011. RIP.
21 - Richie Benaud, Aus LBG. Better known for other talents (such as extremely shrewd captaincy), however 248 Test wkts @ 27, and:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6XjbX6GLSM&feature=related
22 - Shane Warne, Aus LB and variations. Needs no introduction.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJeFsTFECbM&feature=related
23 - Mushtaq Mohammad, PAK LBG. Test batting average of 39, as well as 79 Test wkts @ 29. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkeU8F8qVZg < philosophical rather than action footage.
24 - Shahid Afridi, PAK LBG. Decent Test batsman (av 36.5) but attacking bowling more suited to T20. Also a crazed part-genius.
25 - Ray Illingworth, Eng OB. 122 Test wkts @ 31. Perhaps better known for his determined, shrewd captaincy.
26 - Garfield Sobers WI, every sort of LA. More fmous as a uniquely gifted batsman and fielder/catcher. This pic appears to be one of his spin variations (SLA or SLAC) from the arm and finger positions.
27 - Roger Harper, WI OB. 46 Test wkts @ 28, Test career sadly blighted by the "yips". Outstanding fielder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpnjP3hFfYQ
28 - Allan Border, Aus SLA. Of course famous as a doughty, skilled batsman, and doughty "hard" captain, but could be a niggardly, nagging bowler as well, sometimes deadly in ODIs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q4-nMxuaI0
29 - Hedley Verity, Eng SLA. 144 Test wkts @ 24. Nearly 2000 FC wkts @ under 15.
32 - Johnny Wardle, Eng SLAC. 102 Test wkts @ 20. Intensely political turns in his career, both with Yorkshire and England. Displaced by Lock. (Here for Yorkshire v Australia, Bradford, May 1948.)
33 - Jim Laker, Eng OB. 193 Test wkts @ 21. Needs little introduction to Australians ...... and yet another Yorkshireman in this panoply.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKqcXyh4Vis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxxciwAsIYY - see Benaud and others!
35 - Ellis "Puss" Achong, forever associated with the "Chinaman" variation of the SLA. Achong had Walter Robbins stumped during the Manchester Test of 1933. As Robbins walked back to pavilion, he is said to have murmured to the umpire: "Fancy being done by a bloody chinaman".
