- As good as any Test ton Pup has scored.
- Paris was a bit stiff when he got one of the few good balls that the Ostrich bowled. It cut back and kept a little low, but Paris was in good enogh form to get an inside feather to it.
- Haddit played an awful shot and looks past his used-by date.
- Midge batted very well and looked set for plenty more until he swiped a slow, wide long hop from the Philanderer to mid-on
- Rhino was doing it easy until playing a similarly dreadful shot off the same bowler.
- ABdV tweaked his back and stung his bad hand. Wouldn't surprise me if he was very stiff tonight.
- Under the conditions, 8-214 could have been a whole lot worse.

It'd be very useful if we could scrape another 20 or 30, as Two-Fitty will be competitive, on a wicket that could be very hard to bat on 4th.

AB has had back problems for a while.

Not helped by the idiotic Hudson making him keep in ODIs.

They'll let Haddin play out the series, a little more time for Timmy's finger to heal, then get him in the Test side for the summer.

The trouble is that Paine has had so little cricket in the last season or so that he will be woefully underdone when he is finally fit. Might be a mistake to rush him back in.

Yeah, there was a fairly lengthy discussion in the comm-box about that after he clutched at his back after the dive. Good luck to him, but I won't be heartbroken if he's a bit incapacitated. Very Happy

Jackman at the pitch report said he expects the seamers to have assistance for a couple more days. Clarke, BJ and the Fox team expect Australia to bowl better than SA who were much too short for most of the day. It was agreed that Kallis opened the floodgates.

At his age, with his mediocre keeping and batting, you'd imagine that the NZ series would be possibly his final. But it's like with others in the past, if they keep playing him and he makes runs and keep tidily enough, he'll be hard to drop. The selectors must have a vision as to when they see his finishing line. Hopefully new selector Rod Marsh as an ex-gloveman will understand this.

Still plenty of seam, but Pup and Cot have started well. Tahir drops a sitter in the gully from Cot off Stain.

Pakistanis aren't renowned for their fielding. Hasn't been an auspicious debut by him to this juncture.

Hopefully Harris got his arse kicked hard enough that he knows he has a sh1tload to make up today with the ball.

Haddin - goneski. Hello Wade.

Ponting - goneski although he will probably be given the NZ series to get some form back.

From Cricinfo:

Merlin: "South Africa may not mind being out there for a bit longer - gives the pitch more time to dry out and flatten out."

Bah, another tailender bats well and chucks it away. Still, very useful effort by Cot.

Clarke's best ever innings. Horrie can't even complain about red ink hunting.

Shame Pup chucked it away in the end. I'm sure Lyon felt confident he could help the skipper add anotehr 30 or so. Still at 3-39 and 6-161, 284 is very acceptable.

Now hit that seam, you trundlers.

Big opportunity for Aussies after adding seventy. Ball still swinging and you'd imagine that the tourists won't waste so much time bowling short. On balance the Saffers didn't bowl too well in the conditions apart from Steyn. Arguably Clarke's best innings given the context of the match but some rate his Lord's knock better because of the quality of the attack. Today's session might have won the game for the visitors.
