Retiring just from JAMODIs, continuing in Tests. So Ashes 2013 is still on for Drunky.

Re: Thanks Ricky
Steve Waugh won't be pleased. It was always predictable that he would refuse to retire from tests because he's stubborn but having a good series against India meant that he regained the credit he has probably exhausted before Boxing Day.

Punter said that he's still backing himself to finish his test career on a high.

As opposed to him saying he's still backing himself to finish his test career on a low?

Do people really need to call press conferences to announce their retirement from ODIs?

I'm going to, in a few years.

nope. That's like asking you to grow some hair, Delloavatar. I'm keeping my manpecs on show because they make me VERY happy.
I will keep playing tests, y'know, I've come to the party many times but there will be no more parties for me now I've stepped on the plate for the last time.

I quoted this because he was responding to journos and the likes of ex-players who were suggesting that now was the best time because he would be going out on a high. Implicit in his comment that he will bow out after he's made more runs, not in the way his ODI career faded. Alternatively he could be bullish re. Australia's chances in the Ashes next year, expects to be a member of the winning team and will bow out then.

Re: Thanks Ricky
What is it with senior players and their inability to read the writing on the wall. Why must some truly greats insist on walking the plank in disgrace? Why do the prefer to be pushed than quit in dignity?
I wish Indian selectors had the balls to drop SRT mid tour and recall him back. But where would be a media circus in it with sponsors and advertising revenue if he didn't get a 'glory' sendoff? Qunts.
Well done both Ricky and SRT but please go now for heaven's sake. Don't spoil our wonderful memories and your reputations by being walking wickets for trundlers not fit to tie your shoelaces in misconceived notions that you guys are Supermen who can defy aging and compete with guys half your age.
On a sidenote, I must say that seeing anyone quit one day cricket nowadays doesn't make me feel sad. Just the opposite in fact. I would be delirious if all good players also retired from T20s en masse.

Punter will make about $2 million a year from playing cricket and endorsements
That figure will drop significantly once he stops playing ...
That's why he will need to be pushed to leave ....

Re: Thanks Ricky
If Punter had at any time in the last 10 years GAF about his dignity he would have told Rexona and Suisse to fly a kite, and take their excremental ads with them - there were other cash cows he could have milked without him having to make such an utter bloody clot of himself in the process.

Re: Thanks Ricky
Predictable decision from Punter. My problem is that he will be available for more state games......and we don't farking need him.
Re: Thanks Ricky
Punter hovering around in the background hasn't been a problem for Clarke so far - no reason why it would be for George. And he might think playing in a winning SS final ices the cake nicely - it's one of the very few things he hasn't managed yet.

That's the nub of it, as was outlined below. Punter was the first Aussie cricketer basically raised from birth to be as such and from memory he obtained a bat sponsorship as a minor.
He's still determined to taste success in the Old Dart next year.
