Nevertheless. And here I thought it was bad enough Dravid/laxman were stalling to bag IPL contracts. Laxman anyways didn't sell and invited more disgrace. Hey, at least Ganguly got it right the most. Kumble almost missed the boat, but Ganguly had a fairy tale ending.

Why did we need a press conference from Punter to announce, effectively, nothing?

Watching Punter in the series against India, I thought I was seeing a batsman who was trying to reinvent his game - relying more on cross bat shots and less on front foot drives. Gooch managed to keep going until he was 40, I just wonder if Punter has something similar in mind.

Yes spot on and Punter virtually admitted that in the conference; he wanted things clarified for the public. He did do it bravely though preparing to face the music when everyone knew he had been dropped rather than allowing himself the dignity of retiring from this form of the game.

Tend to agree with Basil's comments re. Punter and his batting. There were a couple of articles today which showed the fight he has ahead of him to go to England where he's determined to go. While he said he expects to go out on a high note, there's journos suggest he looks like he will end up 'dying' with his pads on. But in some ways he has chosen to confront his cricket mortality head on and you have to admire him for that. AB said he's never seen a player work harder. Obviously this bulldog spirit partly explains why he's the player he is.

SOD on the wireless waves saying in no uncertain terms that Ponting is damn lucky to still have the option of playing Test cricket, as he should have been dropped 12 months ago. Obviously Scoob is not on Drunky's Christmas Card list.

Funnily enough, he hasn't formally announced his one day retirement yet has he? It's obvious given CA's track record, he won't be picked in JAMODIs again, so why the hesitation in his making it formal? Looks like he has chosen to retire dragging his feet all the way. Not very unlike India's test seniors too.....

He could have put out a press release. The press conference was overkill.

Since when did he (Ponting) start behaving like a selfish Indian player? I mean playing for money till you are pushed harshly.....

Since MacDonald's, Burger King, KFC, Addidas, Footjoy, Macleans toothpaste, Vaseline hair gel, Skoda Cars, Ali's Tasty Khebabs, Halfords Bicycle Pumps and sundry other organisations opened Direct Credits to his account under the guise of sponsorships.

Isn't that always the case in a waning star's career ... as Nureyev once said of his part in Swan Lake ... 'always take your time dying'.

Fine by me. As long as when he retires or is arsed from the test team he uses his press conference to apologise for the Ashes debacles and admits my son's goldfish could've captained the test/ODI sides he had.

Though I think my son's goldfish would have it by a shade as it didn't fark up three Ashes series.

JGK fired off a little gem on C4 during Ashes 05, when Ricky was talking to his brain Homer style regarding a Third Man (something which the lack of annoyed the sh!t out of all of us). Sort of summed up Ricky's skill as captain brilliantly. Very Happy

Needless to say, Ricky's brain couldn't believe how dumb Ricky was. Laughing

I liked the footage of Warnie throwing up his hands in 2005 at some of Ricky's more puzzling fielding placements.
