Thanks Ricky
Outstanding service to the country in the JAMODI game. Lead us to 2 undefeated World Cups (2003 and 2007) and was a member of the winning 1999 side, easily scored the most runs of any Aus batsman (13,589 @ 41.81) and, with Mark Waugh, was our best fieldsman of the past 20 years.
Thanks for the memories, champ.
And apparently is weighing his career up. Press conference expected within the week.

Re: Thanks Ricky
I see that after the Haddin confusion, they've made sure we all know Ponting was DROPPED, and not "rested."

Re: Thanks Ricky
Saw a longer version of Invers' press conference. He made it clear that the NSP was unanimous that he had to be dropped but that they wanted him to continue in the Test side.
I reckon he might retire.

Didn't he only lead us to 2 WCs?

Sorry, you're right, JGK. 2003 and 2007. Was a member of the winning 1999 side and captained the losing 2011 side.

If he retires from all forms he'll join Dizzy (and Ponny and a couple of others) in the Double Ton in last test club.

Re: Thanks Ricky
Would he really retire from the test team in a sulk after being dumped from the JAMODI side? A bit of perspective required?
He probably should retire, mind.......

Re: Thanks Ricky
I think it's more about (and Invers said as much) momentum. There are 3 Tests in the Windies then nothing until late October. I don't think it's about having a sook or a sulk. I think he's realistic enough to know that he deserved to be punted from the JAMODIs.
It's whether or not he still has the hunger. With two little kids, one would suspect "maybe not".

Re: Thanks Ricky
He'll obviously retire from ODIs but if he's to make a statement on tests it may be to the effect that he bows out in the Caribbean. If that's the case it's a bit of a shame given that he recovered his form after a lot of hard work and could have farewelled his home fans with the double ton in Adelaide. It would have been such a fitting finale in contrast to what might have happened after Hobart who what might still happen if he tours England next year.
He can't really complain about being punted because he was lucky to get picked for the Boxing Day test but at least he showed the benefits of hard work and extreme fitness at an advanced age (cricket wise).

Re: Thanks Ricky
With a new bub at home and loving family life after giving up the captaincy, it will be a tough decision to play on and go to the Caribbean.
I'm betting he announces his retirement this week.

Re: Thanks Ricky
The number of times he's said he wants to play in the Ashes next year, and said he's got plenty to offer in Test cricket, he'll look pretty bloody stupid if he does pull the pin.

Re: Thanks Ricky
I hope you're right. I think he's still one of the best 6 batsmen in the country. But equally, he is allowed to reassess. I don't think anyone would think ill of him if so.

Re: Thanks Ricky
Doubt he'll retire from Tests... he probably thought what I said in the last match thread: "What's the point of Ricky Ponting?". Considering he won't be around at the next WC, there's no point in him playing friendlies that other batsmen could use for practice. Tests are different.

And Invers has given his imprimatur for the tests.

Re: Thanks Ricky
Press conference this morning
"RICKY Ponting is considering his Test future and will announce this morning whether he plans to retire from cricket."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I'm a bit ambivalent about this. He's probably still good enough but is clearly way past his best.

Re: Thanks Ricky
Australia don't have too much Test cricket in the near future so he may feel there isn't a lot of point hanging around, may as well go out on a high in terms of the longer format at least. Would have thought he might fancy a tour of the Caribbean to finish though!
If this is to be the end for him it's quite a sudden one after his Test career post-captaincy seemed to be in the ascendancy again. One of Australia's greatest batsmen even if his captaincy perhaps won't be remembered so fondly. The last of the era of legends, facing an Aussie side without "Drunky" will take some getting used to!

Re: Thanks Ricky
Aye, beams, the Test forward program doesn't augur well for Rick to maintain the rage. And with the Windies tour coming, he may think it an ideal opportunity to step down and give another middle order player a go.
The Ashes is probably too far away, despite what he has said in the past.

Re: Thanks Ricky
I don't know, it seems with the older generation they give up ODIs and continue in Test cricket. I can certainly see Ponting as the sort of player who clings on doggedly to the bitter end. I bet he was overjoyed that he returned back to form because it does give him the chance to extend his Test career, especially if he's going to give up ODIs.
Re: Thanks Ricky
Ashes or family, Ashes or family. Although, doesn't sound like there'd be much travelling involved: "If Ponting decides to continue playing Test cricket he will travel to the West Indies next month for a three-match series and will have no further cricket until next summer."

I'd put up a poll to see what FB thinks the outcome of the press conference will be, but I, like the rest of you, couldn't be arsed.

Re: Thanks Ricky
He'll probably get a county gig... probably Somerset. Get his eye in nice and early for the Ashes, after the Windies tour.
Re: Thanks Ricky
mmm, help Somerset to a well deserved championship and a one day trophy. Sounds good.
