lardy SMSed me that it was Redders. I had no clue. From his Cricinfo profile...

"An old boy of Geelong College, like Lindsay Hassett, Jack Iverson and Paul Sheahan, Ian Redpath began his career as a sweet striker of the ball, but became an opener so obdurate that he did not strike a six until his 66th Test (whereupon he promptly cracked another one). A lanky, long-necked figure without a spare ounce of flesh, he was the last Australian to play as an amateur: in 1963-64 he declined his fee so as not to jeopardise his amateur football career."

Ya learn sumpent new every day.

It's reported that a boat load of asylum seekers with 150 on board has just capsized north of CI. Expect more fallout.

Yes, there is a rescue mission currently being mounted on a number of fronts.

Just as an aside, this must really blow the budget for the navy and border protection control boats. Apparently these rescue efforts are costing millions.

It's still probably cheaper than housing and processing them all.

Is it an extra cost of millions ...or a cost of millions ...maybe some extra fuel is used to get the boats and choppers to the the rescue site in a hurry ...but the boats exist, the crews get fed and paid whether there are illegal entrants by boats to rescue or not

That's a reasonable point. I was just going by what I have read and also bearing in mind how tight the budgets of government departments/organisations are.

Fairfax is reporting that the boat is in Indonesian waters but that the Indonesian authorities have no capacity for a rescue that far off shore.

In that case, any people rescued should be taken back to Indonesia.

On the wireless just now it was reported that Bob Carr angrily criticised the Greens for not being more flexible with their asylum-seeker policy, saying their insistence on onshore processing was dangerous and inhumane because it actively encouraged the boats to keep coming, in direct contravention of that slag Christine Milne's view on why her policy is right. About time a pinko showed some commonsense.

Dear God in Heaven, she's flipped

"THE Government's road to electoral recovery rests with a new demographic known as "mummy bloggers", Labor MPs have been told.

And they have been urged to get on Facebook to reach this new generation of "soft" voters.

In the last caucus meeting before MPs break for winter recess, Prime Minister Julia Gillard subjected her backbench to a one-hour PowerPoint presentation on how she would restore Labor's credibility.

But many MPs were unmoved.

One senior right-wing MP said Ms Gillard told them she had a plan and "not to worry". Asked what the plan was, the MP replied: "I can't remember. I stopped listening as soon as the PowerPoint screen came down."

Another MP said Ms Gillard appeared to get "narky" as many MPs seemed to be paying little attention."

---------------------------------------

Oh shit, i-Geners to the rescue for the Pinkos. We are truly farked now. Shocked

The Vulture is clearly folding under the pressure. What an incompetent boob she is.

The previous one was too but according to our Border Protection Offices they didn't have the capacity to effect a proper rescue which is why we intervened.

The passengers are mostly women and children, the Daily Telegraph reports.

This will probably make the debate more emotive. I can understand the idea of people being outraged over the death or potential death of children but it has always intrigued me the way news report bombing deaths as including women and children. I don't know why outside of war, the death of men should be any less shocking than the deaths of women in a world where we are trying to promote equal opportunity!

Abbott is pulling off a stunt and is going to introduce a Bill that would legitimise Nauru post the High Court in the Malaysian solution case but which would not legitimise Malaysia.

Here are his comments:

1.15pm: Here's Mr Abbott.

Another grim day to our north, he says.

Our main concern is to encourage everyone involved in a difficult situation.

I will be going into the parliament at the conclusion at this press conference to introduce the Coalition's private members bill allowing processing of arrivals in any country that has signed the convention.

It seems to be the common ground on which policy can rest.

We think the parliament should do what it can immediately to enable a stronger policy response from the government.

Lets give the government legislation that will put offshore porcessing beyond legal doubt.

This is a very difficult day.

I think all members of parliament should be consulting their consciences.

So he's using the current spate of drownings to morally justify why the Coalition's position should be followed as is without giving any ground with the government who is willing to compromise.

What a revolting qunt he is. It defies belief that he will be our Prime Minister.

Interestingly the "Malaysia solution" doesn't cover women and children. So 800 men would be sent to Malaysia while the boats keep coming full of women and children.

Also reported on the wireless a little while ago, the Malaysian Opposition (who stand their best chance in ages to win Govt at the next election) have said they reject the Malaysia solution outright. So it could all be a moot point soon.

And now this...

1.35pm: BREAKING: The Prime Minister will make a statement on today's tragedy at 2pm.

The Government will bring on Independent Rob Oakeshott's bill to facilitate offshore processing.

This would give the government Malaysia as a destination for processing.

They must now be confident that it will get through the Reps.

Still need the Greens to fold though unless they also think that a few Coalition Senators might cross the floor.
