South Africa v New Zealand, 1st Test, Cape Town, 2-6 January, 2013
In terms of world interest, probably on a par with the Aus/SL 3rd Test in Sydney on at the same time.
Sides?

At least the kiwis beat the Lankans on Lankan soil and SA is apt to lose a test at home even when you least expect it. The Lankans beat SA in Durban last year. Kiwis tend to lift themselves to be competitive; Lankans in oz are just pox regardless of who turns up for the home team.

South Africa's biggest enemy will be their own complacency. Is Kallis going to be fit? Will they give him more time to recover seeing as it's only NZ?
They'll probably go with the same side that beat the Aussies at Perth, assuming they play Kallis.

Pretty sure Kallis will be fit. Philander is in doubt.

So I guess Kleinveldt would play if Philander isn't fit.

Is there a raw young quick they could gamble on considering the lack of quality in their opposition? I can't think of anyone. Their fast bowling depth isn't actually all that great.

Basheeru Walters? Seems like he might have found some consistency this season. And he's always been pretty lively.

I wonder how long it will take Steyn to get his 300th. First 3 overs I reckon.

And Kallis 20 to get to 13k. Less than 400 to overtake Ponting for 2nd place.

I'm sure this has been raised before, but why is it that the New Year test in South Africa starts on January 2nd, but the one in Aus starts on January 3rd? Aus cricketers getting too soft?

There is some regulation about time between test matches. SA didn't have a Boxing Day one this year. Remember in oz Occupational, Health and Safety etc. rules!

In the meantime NZ are battling against a very average SA invitation team.

NZ have an exciting young pace attack(as they showed in Hobart last year)
SA will obviously win but it won't as easy as some think.

Doubt it, NZ beat SL on their home turf. Lanka is as poor as is going around. Also most of the SA players haven't played since Perth so could be a tad rusty. At least the kiwis had a warm-up match even though they didn't startle there.
