I reckon MrK is on the money with the 36/37 Aus Ashes side. I reckon it's the 1st Test side that got smashed by 322 runs. In the picture is:PeterCS wrote:D. Year? And how many of these can you name?
Back Row (L to R): Arthur Chipperfield, Ernie McCormack, Morris Sievers, Bill OReilly, Frank Ward
Front Row (L to R): Ray Robinson, Jack Badcock, Stan McCabe, Don Bradman, Jack Fingleton, Bert Oldfield

Yeah, close to the mark again, I think. That's Wally Hammond, Patsy Hendren and Kumar Shri "Duleep" Duleepsinhji scratching their heads about how to get that squinty eyed qunt Bradman out (he made 254) at Lords 27 June to 1 July 1930.JGK wrote:Middle guy looks like Patsy Hendren. Assuming that the Indian player is his team mate I guess it has to be Duleep. A. Who are these three gents, and what's got them worried?
Also not sure what they are worried about. The balcony in the background might be Lords.

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
Hmm, looks like the 1960-61 Aus v Windies series. Given it looks like c Simpson b Davidson perhaps Cammy Smith in Sydney or Conrad Hunte in Melbourne against Alan Davidson, Wally Grout keeping, Bob Simpson at 1st slip, Neil Harvey at 2nd, and maybe Slasher Mackay or Norm O'Neill at 3rd? If it's Smith then it's Hunte at non-strikers end, and if it's Hunte it's Sobers? I reckon it looks like Sobers, so I'll say it's the 5th Test in Melbourne 1960-61 - CC Hunte c Simpson b Davidson 31 in Aus's 2 wicket win to take the magnificent series 2-1 with a tie.PeterCS wrote:B. He hadn't fattened up into his run-scoring peak weight in his 30s. If my answer is correct, he was only 27 at the time.JGK wrote:That's a skinny Wally Hammond I must say.

Hmm, I reckon the guy on the right looks like a young Colin "Ollie" Milburn. If that's correct, I'm guessing the link is a lost eye, but I can't place the debonair chap on the left. Anyone?PeterCS wrote:C. What did these two players have in common?
(If you can work it out, there are at least four points of similarity.)

Yeah, him and Saffie "Buster" Nupen came up on my Google search, but I don't think the left bloke is either. His face is familiar but can't quite put a name to it.JGK wrote:Pataudi only had one eye as well.
I'm 99% sure the right hand bloke is Milburn so I think I'm in the ball park of Petey's Q at least. Ollie was a Northants player, perhaps the other was too? Maybe Dan will know?

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
I think I might have it. I can't find an image to confirm but MB's "clue" re: "Fred" might be enough. I was checking through the Freds that have played for Northants and Fred Bakewell may be the other guy in the pic.
This from Cricinfo:
"Alfred Harry "Fred" Bakewell, who died at Westbourne, Bournemouth, on January 23, 1983, aged 74, was, from the spectator's point of view, one of the most exciting batsmen of his generation and the car smash which ended his career was as disastrous as that which finished Milburn's years later."
So I reckon the common points for Fred Bakewell and Colin Milburn are:
1. Northants players
2. Exciting batsmen
3. Career ended by a car smash
4. Made tons v WI (Bakewell 107 The Oval 1933, Milburn 126* Lords 1966)
5. Averaged over 45 in Tests (Bakewell 45.44, Milburn 46.71)

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
Yep, that's more or less got it on the nail.
A couple of small adjustments:
1/2: both attacking OPENERS, as well. Slater, Jaya, Haydos, Sehwag were far from being pioneers in this regard.
3. Well, both fledgeling TEST careers cut short by the serious car crash, to be exact. Olly attempted a comeback, but with one eye was never the same. Bakewell never played FC cricket again.

Quite right about Pic 2, in all respects.skully wrote:Hmm, looks like the 1960-61 Aus v Windies series. [pics getting seriously cropped on the right with the multiple copying-in, so please check back if necessary - PCS]
But who's the gently swaying batsman in Pic 1? (this one's @ SCG, 3rd Test, btw). It's not Conrad this time. Facially it looks more like Slasher than Norm at short gully. And it's definitely Sobers at the non-striker's (on his way to a ton and a half) - way too tall and elegant for the compact and slightly hunched Hunte - if you compare him snicking in Pic 2.

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
Skully's analysis here is correct in all respects. The 1930 Ashes series was the one where Bradman broke through, and broke English hearts.skully wrote:Yeah, close to the mark again, I think. Or perhaps more accurate to say, broke MCC's nerve. The extremely popular (and to that point, very successful) captain Percy Chapman was suddenly sacked for the final Test - with the score still at 1-1 - and the way Bradman and Australia then ran away with the Oval Test led straight to "Bodyline".
The always jolly Chapman turned more seriously to drink, and though he was allowed one more series, with Aus in mind, and with England still shell-shocked from Bradman's assaults, occasional corporal Jardine was then given the captain's revolver - with the infantry to deploy, and the heavy cannon of an unprecedented four quicks for Australia, with a historic bombing mission to carry out.
The Donbusters.

That's just about it. Though there is something strange about it.skully wrote:I reckon MrK is on the money with the 36/37 Aus Ashes side.

To me (I have no team ID list, so I may be wrong). second from left in the front row looks like the neatly central-parted Leo O'Brien rather than Badcock (who had almost monobrow thick eyebrows, and heavier features).
If so, that makes it a team for the SECOND Test (SCG), with Ray Robinson, having had his one Test and 12th man for this one, sitting in rather sheepishly for the absent ill Badcock.
Ernie McCorm-I-ck btw! This might seem pedantic - though I think it's always good and polite to respect people's names where possible! - but the i spelling is the traditional Protestant spelling, a is the Catholic version. Up to a few years ago, you could have got shot for that minute spelling error

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
In the light of a spate of recent "Best XI"s, here are a couple of quiz questions.
Who do you think chose these three "ATG XI"s?
I'll give a clue each time, as clearly it is not easy when some names stand out internationally.
Team 1 - who chose it?
(Clue: "The only basis on which I can pick a World XI is selecting from those who I played with and against in Test cricket - with the exception of Warne.")
1. S Gavaskar
2. G Greenidge
3. V Richards
4 J Miandad
5 G Chappell
6 A Border
7 A Gilchrist
8 W Akram
9 S Warne
10 J Garner
11 D Lillee

T'only one I know for sure is number three (almost not worth saying). But his name rhymes with Schmadman.
