Right, I'm shit at facial recognition. The last one looks like a white Duleep. But I think half the people look like a white Duleep.
One looks like Ranji. Think the player on the second row far right is CB Fry. He looks similar.PeterCS wrote:γ

Relating to the batsman at the top of this page ...
Now, about the hat: It is significant. On another head, it was the start of the trouble in Oz.
And if your second point is true, that must cause you an whole lot of grief in your love life.
If you need another clue (there are three above), the motley cap is a sign of a select membership.

γ [was ...]
1. Identify the two Sussex men
2. Who is the unlikely-named captain?
[/quote]
Which leaves the captain to be deduced/guessed/found.
Merls: What disrespect once again, for a famous/notorious legend of the game, and one of your own to boot!
Mind you, he was probably the daddy of another of your own, whom you seem to loathe as a shifty manipulator, so perhaps you're just being consistent.
Further clue: fairly fruity.

Stanley Jackson? Guessing purely because I think the captain sits in the centre and that tash looks too well maintained for Ranji's secretary, Archie MacLaren.
That explains a bit.... my second guess was a tanned Archie Jackson, which is what almost all the other half look like. The cap a weird looking MCC cap?PeterCS wrote:Naw! Blimey, I don't think Archie ever had features that finely chiselled.
No, JGK was sort of "warm", and exactly the right era, though the pictured guy was slightly younger. (EDIT: just checked - only 5 years, in fact.)
Come on, he's an important figure for your country!!
Now about that cap again:
Not MCC. More academic. More multicoloured, clownish.

The Quaint Jahangir???
Harlequin is definitely correct, anyway.
A cap worn by Oxford (University) Blues.
Jardine played the first of his twenty-two test matches, against the West Indians, in 1928 and toured Australia in 1928–9. He played a sound part in England's 4–1 victory over Australia and had a tour average of 64.88. At Adelaide he and W. R. Hammond set a record of 262 for an England third-wicket stand against Australia, which remains unbeaten. On personal grounds, however, the tour proved to be the groundstone of his later troubles. His Harlequin cap—symbol of class and imperialism to a sensitive society—brought a fierce response by what he himself called ‘partial and unintelligent barracking’ (Chapman and others, 215). Wisden's comment that to Australian crowds barracking ‘was part of their day's enjoyment’ (Wisden, 1930, 659) was a view that Jardine never came to appreciate. It had been unfortunate that he had fielded on the boundary and been vulnerable to the crowds.

He wore the same cap. (Same design cap, perhaps I should add.)
It's a contemporary of his at Oxford.

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
Yes indeed. TO be exact Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, the older Nawab.
Hence my paperchase of clues, which all fell on stony ground! (see highlighted bits below)
Pataudi Snr was also on the Bodyline tour, though he didn't last long in the Tests. And though also an Oxford blue, he didn't exhibit the fact of his exclusive status.
And (to put it mildly) he didn't see eye-to-eye with his captain - who famously called him a "conscientious objector" when he baulked at joining the "legtrap squad" in the First Test. An example of Jardine's ultra-dry humour admittedly, this nevertheless indicates just how wedded "DRJ" was to the idea of the Ashes as warfare.
Despite his aristocratic status, the Indian was the direct reverse of Jardine in what would now be called "PR skills". When asked by one of the Test crowds what they should call his Lordship, he offered: "Just call me Pat!"
And when some wag in the crowd yelled out: "Hey Gandhi!! Where's your donkey?!" - which might have been an awkward moment - the Nawab retorted: "AHHH - THERE you are!! I've been looking for you all morning!!"
You can imagine how he went down with the Aussie crowds - in complete contrast to his glacial, smouldering captain.
And how popular he was with that same captain.

Retrospective apols to Trike - I didn't see the (now bolded) first bit of this reply of yours - I noticed only the (now greyed) later bit.
So I'll now add a belated reply (at the end) ....
No, I said he had an improbable name - which FS Jackson and AC MacLaren hardly are. It's one of those names you couldn't make up - like http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/26415.html
A further clue is Scottish roots.
I must admit he's not half as famous as those other two you guessed at - and the match probably needs hunting down if he is to be identified. But he DID play 265 FC matches, and win 8 England caps ....!
So I'll now add a belated reply (at the end) ....
The skipper is indeed the mustachioed stranger in the middle. He does have a faint, forbidding resemblance to the great Stan - but it's not him. And his features are a bit too dark and heavy for AC MacLaren, too.tricycle wrote:Stanley Jackson?
