Tyldesley indeed. Johnny to be precise. (Not splitting hairs: there were at least as many Lancashire Tyldesleys as NSW Darlings, L@@K:
https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=cr&ei=JqF9UvnlD4b60gXPhIAQ#psj=1&q=tyldesley+cricinfo
Such that cricinfo doesn't recognise some of the brothers in the biogs ... and gets Johnny touring Aus in 1924, after he had retired from cricket (!): http://www.espncricinfo.com/sss09/content/image/index.html?object=21636
He's the one with the Red Rose cap - far right of the middle row.
You're right about the two Tykes: Hirst (top left) and the ever-terrifying steel-eyed Rhodes (front left) proudly bear the famous "banana-bunch" White Rose of Yorks on their headgear.
As to the odd one out: I was thinking more of the ump! (WAJ West, far right of the back row! I'm not sure what happened to the Gents' nominated umpire - maybe he was caught short during the photocall.)
So basically you got it all right!
btw: Hayward, Abel, Lockwood is a fair old triumvirate in the middle of that picture. More ... of Bash than ... of Gash.
And a shoutout for a beatifically smiling Alberto Trott, in the middle of the back row. ~ "Mr Lord's Paviilon"!

Well, that works well too (well spotted) - but I suppose he was at least allowed to play in this team!
Glad you like it.
I have weirded myself out with the wordiness of my replies. But I find this stuff fascinatingly "back-storied" ... and though stats can be intriguing to a point, it's the stories, the players ticking (or not ticking), the cast of them that moves me a lot more.
Plus, I have now read too much - especially of the Bodyline era.
Not an excuse for the verbosity, but I plead some mitigation on grounds of personal interest, and research. ...

Still no takers for this? - only the biggest 'war' ever in international cricket!

Tying up loose ends, as these seem to be too knotty

Any connection to women's cricket here?
The solution to Merlo's ladyboy query is:PeterCS wrote:
Merls: What disrespect once again, for a famous/notorious legend of the game - and one of your own to boot!
Mind you, he was probably the daddy of another of your own, whom you seem to loathe as a shifty manipulator, so perhaps you're just being consistent.
Further clue: fairly fruity.
- Spoiler:
- That there is Pelham Warner, in 1901 (Gentlemen v Players). Later MCC panjandrum and England Tour Manager - including on the 'Bodyline tour', from which tactics he recoiled once it was expedient to do so. Perhaps mischievously reputed to be the biological father of 'Gubby' Allen - hence the comment above. Both Middlesex men stout and true, like our Merlin.
The other guy sitting on the grass I was alluding to (notably square jaw, etc.) is Gilbert Jessop.

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
And ... (this further cartoon by the great Tom Webster)
PeterCS wrote:α
This one needs an exact answer. - Before which match was this cartoon drawn?
- Answer:
- Webster is 'looking forward' to the 4th Test of the legendary 1932-33 series (Brisbane), after it had all kicked off at Adelaide - Woodfull and Oldfield felled, though not with the leg-trap up, crowd uproar, even (against all the demure protocol of a well-behaved age) very nearly a pitch invasion, then telegram warfare, a big international incident across the globe, and not only in the cricket arena.
In fact Jardine had tried out 'fast leg theory' from the very 1st Test on - even though the supposed target of this plan of single-minded bombardment, the young Bradman, was not even available for that one! - but it was only at Adelaide that the shit really hit the fan. Especially when Jardine ordered up the Bodyline field the next ball after his counterpart, the older and much less agile Woodfull had been struck full in the chest! Which to those (who were there) had to seem - well, a bit callous - and also a far cry from the supposed intention of the strategy, to quell the quick-footed, quick-bobbing young master ......... nuff said.
Personal view - Webster's cartoon is brilliant. And not just witty, and well-drawn, as a scene of Total War and mayhem. Webster resists taking the usual English press line to that point: that the Aussies were just 'squealing' because they were losing against what was - via the slow telecommunicative means of the day - reported back home as skilful, fast England bowling that was heroically inflicting defeats (but no word of injuries). I like his sardonic and what seems in retrospect an entirely fair-minded view of what "the nice game of cricket" had become!

1. Who's the distinguished-looking gent on the far left?
2. Can you name any others in this obscure band?
(Not sure what the little fellow second right has under his hat - probably a flaw in the picture rather than a bra, I suppose.)

P. This is from 1926. But it's a caption competition, only a bit like the old "spot the ball" too:
How close can you get to the wording of the wife's reply?
Husband: "Here's the summer half gone and we've still not won a Test match. Thank goodness we've still got Manchester and the Oval."
Wife: ???

R. Finally a non-image question:
What does Ravi Shastri have in common with Neil Harvey, Bill Brown and C. Aubrey Smith?
(And, if we want to to make that - I think - an exclusive club, also with Monty Bowden, Buster Nupen, Hugh Massie and Maurice Fernandes ...)

Re: Trivia & Quizzia 2013 (an occasional series, by whoever wishes)
Q, R - correct, Wally.
R could perhaps be called the "Once Captain Wonders"?
J. Aye, I will certainly have to give you that too - I suppose I didn't word this well enough!
Both shots are from the SCG, both the start of the innings (and I believe also the match) - 1st and 5th Tests of 32-33.
You could also answer: Ponny got the sack, and Vic was promoted (he looks scarily like Ol' Adolf in some pics - I suppose that look was not so uncommon before for some mysterious reason it went out of fashion round about 1945).
With no great success though - Richardson fared worse than Ponsford, after being one of the few to follow Stan McCabe's lead earlier in the series and counter-attack (basically, hook the fast body deliveries) with some success.
Bradman took more the route of running around and whacking it through the empty offside when he could get hold of it. Ultra-fast footwork, sharp eye, etc.

I am waiting for you to ask what famous events occurred in the game featured in "Q"?
I assume one of them is in the process of happening in the photo.
