Rain has finally come, after a long absence, and will hopefully help douse the fires, particularly the more troublesome ones around Forcett and Ellendale.
With the change coming through, it was actually pretty cold last evening in Launceston, below 10 I'd guess. Better than the 40+ last Friday.

Good news...
but another hot day today - 37C in Melb and doubtless much worse elsewhere
one of the great and terrible myths is about the capacity of fire brigades to put serious let alone dire fires out...almost invariably the only way such catastrophic fires go out is through weather change inc wind shifts and rain

I didn't note any quantity mentioned in the article so I'm not sure how "deep" found it's way into the thread title.

Wrong on that one h ........ whatever other faults he may have, living exclusively off the taxpayer is not one of them. His income comes from the Duchy of Cornwall, on which he is taxed.
Like any other donor, he's no need to make public the ammount of any donation to any cause, but I see no reason to doubt the quote in BD's link, where the Red Cross appeal organisers say that the donation is "significant". As the fund is approaching 2 million bucks in what - a couple of weeks or so ? ..... I don't imagine for a moment it's a cheque for a couple of hundred.

Your churlishness knows no bounds given the dire straits of the fire victims. Another report described the donation as substantial. How much have you & Horrie donated?

At a guess, it would be the same price as anyone else pays for inherited assets, so I'm not sure it's relevant to a thread regarding a disaster making international headlines.
I hope you'd agree that this thread isn't the place to discuss the principle of inherited wealth. It's plain that you're a keen republican, and I respect that point of view. We've opposing views at the most basic level on issues like monarchy and inheritance, horrie - but I'm not here to pick fights. We should agree to disagree here, I think.
I wouldn't say you were disrespecting the victims of the infernos - simply correcting the erroneous belief that the PoW was donating taxpayers money in the guise of a personal philanthropy. No offence taken, I hope.

Re: bushfire and weather thread
More fires on the way in NSW, and a couple of the Tassie fires still aren't out. With 30 plus temperatures and strong hot winds forecast here over the next few days, things could get ugly again.

Same. Pretty heavy but not settling. Supposed to go on for 24 hours more though so it has a chance.
