Am glad that Sydney and Brisbane are resisting AFL demands to get drop-in pitches. The one at the 'G has improved since its first incarnation but there seems to be a bit of blandness about it.

And better to bat on, making Pup's call to bowl first a stroke of genius.

Re: is the MCG the olympus of sport?
final crowd figure was 271000+ for 4 days...people like ange, taips and the bannies do not get it - let alone the spivs who will be lucky to have half the crowd..
melbournians just love a contest in any sporting event...how else to explain a world record crowd of 95k+ singing 'you'll never walk alone', monumental crowds for minor sports like RU and Leeeg..
and then the G really rocks on the last saturday in september when a near 100k rock up for the AFL granny...
the G is the epicentre of the sports capital of the world

No mention of alternate Olympi yet.....not even Wembley Stadium (which can at least hold the crowd, and has hosted a World Cup final, which I can't see the MCG doing in my lifetime).

"Never mind the quality, feel the soize 'n' noize"?
Size clearly matters to you, H - from the way you tell it.

I love the MCG but it really is too big for cricket. I have exceptional eyesight, but seeing the ball from the back half of those top stands is tough work.

Of course I get it. You are saying there are more LFC supporters in Melbourne than Aus cricket supporters.
Makes sense that they know even less about football, than cricket.

Ah the irony.
As usual when horrie gets farked over in debate he resorts to personal abuse.
As predictable as it is poor debating skills.

Horace - on your initial point:
To be fair now (since your vuvuzuela-like local patriotism - perhaps inevitably - provoked largely defiant responses ...)
It's no doubt a vast and exciting cauldron (the Maracana in Rio also comes to mind).
But you can argue either way whether mammoth size = highest quality.
"Olympus" suggests gods. Remember in Ancient Greece, they fell out all the time, warred like hellcats, with regular blood, thunder and devastation.
Or maybe that's what you meant?

Re: is the MCG the olympus of sport?
fairy nuff Pete....the thing about the G is not just its size but the atmosphere that we punters in melb crave...we will go off to watch a contest of flies crawing up the wall...dont think we are undiscerning - it is just that melbournians love a contest..
of course it is not Mt Olympus - tho the 1st friendly Olympics were contested there....I guess having lived in exile for donkeys years in Chipland , I get carried away from seeing the G from the nursing home home on the hill which overlooks the hallowed field

I liked Adelaide.
Quaint and quirky.
MCG sucks - made me want to wear a parachute stuck way up in the Gods!
Midgets running around the field chasing an imaginary ball . . .
