When Mitchell returned to the pavilion with 167 not out against his name, spectators in every stand, marquee and corporate junket stood to applaud. This was Mitchell's third century on the College Ground, where his average is 115. His 167 not out makes him highest run-scorer in the country.

Those who decry his achievement because his runs have been scored against second-tier attacks might do Mitchell the courtesy of watching him bat; they would see one of the most accomplished and well-organised batsmen in the country in the best form of his career. It really is not unknown for such cricketers to play in Test matches.

shirley he is in the mix  to replace Chef

Probably not - to pick Mitchell as captain and opening bat would be an admission that all the coaching structures that the ECB had put in place had essentially failed. Think of a sentence using the words "Turkey" and "Christmas"

Meaker stepping up again for Surrey in the televised T20 game with Middlesex.

First over was rubbish, 83-84mph, I was writing his obituary. 4-15 in his next three overs, cranking up the pace consistently around 88-89mph and showcasing a sweet slower ball and quality yorker.

Was quicker than Finn in the match - although he bowled well too.

Throw spinner Ravi Patel into the mix, and you've got the makings of a decent young England bowling attack there.

Finn is only 25? Fark me, feels like he's been around for ages.

25 years is ages. If you're waiting for a bus, for example.

It's all about context.

They'll probably be sent on a strengthening and conditioning programme this winter, which will basically ensure that they both end up on the scrapheap.

Luke Wright 153* as Sussex chase down 225 against Essex (T20).

I swear, 225 used to be a defendable total in 50 over cricket 15 years back.

It's bizarre (yet telling?) that Pukey can destroy county attacks at will, and yet look like such a hopeless slogdonkey in international cricket.

105 off 71 balls for Lewis Gregory in the 50 over stuff today. So he can bowl 90mph yorkers, and hit hundreds off 70 balls, yet he's nowhere near England's radar…..And 30 year old "never will be" Tom Smith is. Go figure.

Notts in T20 quarter-finals are like England in penalty shoot-outs, Jimmy White in world snooker finals etc...

Athers was lavish in his praise for Billings about three years ago. Called him the best young English batsman he'd seen for ages. Dropped off the radar proper for a while, but seems to have found his way again. Keeping as well these days so there's another string to his bow.

Notts have gone AGBB.

Hales 141 off 96.
Little Jimmy Taylor 100* off 55.

Fark.

They'll still go with Cook and Bell at the top...

Where's all the Little Jimmy "can't hit it off the square" critics tonight then? 7 sixes in that innings. Not sure where the next Test opportunity will come for him with Ballance, Bell and Root establishing a pretty solid middle order, but he deserves a run in JAMODIs just as much as Hales does, and if you impress in one format it often opens doors to the others.

Hmmm, Slurrey sign Ben Foakes - future England wicket keeper - from Essex.

Fed up of playing second fiddle to James Foster, he's done a bunk to a county who will give him more action.

Quite what this means for Steve Davies' wicket keeping career is anyone's guess, especially with Gary Wilson taking the gloves in recent times.

Wee Jimmy's going to have to do better than average 38 with zero hundreds in FC cricket for a start.

The Middlesex bowling attack looked like a bunch of dobbers and Ravi Patel.

Surely Hales will be called up to the ODI side. But I'm with beamer here- You just know they'll go with Cook and Bell at the top again. The Oval test really should be Cook's last cricket of the Summer. He needs a break.

He's looked like a lost soul whenever I've seen him on TV this season. I wouldn't be surprised if he quietly left Surrey.

Yeah, he's seemingly really struggling. Perhaps he needs a move back home, get some TLC from Worcs, get back on track.
