tonight, tomorrow ... I've given up. We've 'all done very well' so the tournament is over as far as Im concerned; there's no chance of victory in the final.

Big night for Aus football as we face off against South Korea in the final of the Asian Cup. A sell-out 80,00 crowd is expected to be roaring for Aus at ANZ Stadium tonight.

Re: The Football Thread 2014/15
High energy 1st half with South Korea much the better side, with their highly organised defence and silky, mistake free touches on the ball. Aus hung on by the skin of their teeth, with 2 very good chances missed by the Koreans after slick passing opened up the defence at the back. Aus had one chance to Tim Cahill...
...UNTIL, 2 back-to-back errors by the SKs saw a quick throw to Sainsbury who slotted a precision through ball to Massimo Luongo, who, with a wonderful first touch, turned past his defender and smacked a beautiful right footer inside the right post. Absolutely cracking goal to give Aus a 1-0 lead at Oranges.

Re: The Football Thread 2014/15
Australia bumbled and stumbled and passed poorly for the 2nd 45 minutes but hung onto a fragile 1-0 lead. But with 90 seconds left in stoppage time, the dominant South Koreans found a deserved equaliser. Aus are out on their feet but the Koreans are still charging around. Must be the snail sperm soup!!
Anywho, onto extra time. Aus has no subs left and are hobbling. Hard to see them holding out the South Koreans from here.

Re: The Football Thread 2014/15
Fark me, they did it!!! Tommy Uric managed to wriggle away from 2 defenders to nudge a ball across the goal face, it was parried by the keeper into the path of Troisi who buried it. The Koreans came in waves but couldn't trouble Matt Ryan.
Fantastic tension!!

Guess our ranking might rise from one hundred but then again they are only ranked sixty-nine.
Must be the biggest also-rans tournament of the soccer world.
Just as a matter of interest, are we Asian?

No, Australia aren't Asian, but Oceania is pointless. I think some Middle Eastern countries are already making noises about it.
Then again, Kazakhstan isn't European, neither are they worth the time to fly, but they're still part of UEFA. Israel was part of Oceania once... although their non involvement in Asia is for rather obvious reasons.

I dropped out of Geography before HSC but I never figured the ME was part of Asia either. If they are, how the hell do ME countries get to enter the Eurovision Song Contest?

Cracking final and tournament. A massive success by any/all measures. (Not the least because the good guys won) surprised how good the actual quality of football played was after how crap the Asian sides were at the WC.

As gripping a final as you could ask for.

Re: The Football Thread 2014/15
How good was the South Korean 34 year old right back??!! What a player.
In the end the combo of two slick goals, a wonderfully organised defence under Mile Jedinak, and a great goalkeeping display by Mat Ryan (he played like a stopper) overcame the superior South Koreans.

Re: The Football Thread 2014/15
It was very tense, ETG. SK dominated possession, particularly in the 2nd Half.
The ref seemed to be only watching Aus when looking for free kicks, but the Koreans were much better on the ball than we were. Our control and passing was fairly poor compared to the SKs but in the end we out-muscled the slick southern peninsular lads. Not our best ever performance on the pitch but good enough in the end.
Our two goals were top shelf. Luongo's was magic, and Troisi's a testament to Tommy Juric's persistence - he was fouled twice but got up, nutmegged the defence and sent a great cross far enough away from the keeper that he could only parry it into the path of Troisi. My house erupted late on Saturday evening, as I thought we we done for after the late, late equaliser from South Korea. However, we had the better of extra time. Perhaps the Eveready batteries that the SKs played on finally ran low.

Aye, for all SK's dominance Ryan did not have to make a single save of note - although their number 7 did flash a couple just over the top. The two Aussie stoppers were immense. If holger was still the manager we would still be playing Lucas Neill ffs.
Milligan played a cracker too. Maybe the standard of the A-league isn't that bad (defensively anyway).

Re: The Football Thread 2014/15
A very surprising result! I started watching shortly before Luongo's goal and was immobile until the end. The last 30 seconds of extra time looked likely to provide a repetition of the end of the main period, but we escaped the penalty shootout somehow.
What was the penalty count? Why was Cruse booked for rupturing his Achilles in an era where most players who dive or fall down seeking a foul are up running around like two year olds almost immediately after the whistle has been blown? That was a bit weird.

Apparently* its the first time the ACL and Asian Cup winners have come from the same country.
