Cook: Anderson on par with Steyn.
http://www.sport24.co.za/Cricket/Anderson-Steyn-on-par-Cook-20140814
Obviously Anderson has been very good for his team and a standout in the era but is he as good as Steyn? He is skilful but Steyn's stats are clearly superior which might suggest that he has a greater capacity to have success on all types of surfaces.
Steyn or Anderson?

Typical England - they win a couple of games and now they're world beaters.
Where was "Dale Steyn" when Australia were pummelling England 5-0 over the winter?

Actually Dello I know it wasn't just people here asking questions about Anderson earlier in this series.

Going for 28 off an over from a guy who has now been dropped from the Test team.

And of course Clarke would say that Hughes will play 100 tests.

As Dellos said, it's just the usual sack of shit that comes up when we've won a couple. We get buoyed like little children. Every piece of ineptitude, weakness and turmoil of the last two years has now not only been forgotten, it has actually been eradicated. Any why not? Let the baby have its bottle. I'm just really glad they're happy. I was really devastated that these petulant, exceptionally paid people were a little bit saddy-waddy because they weren't performy-wormy. Now I'm ecstatic. I really am. Because they're amazing again. OK, they'll get dicked in ODI cricket and in next year's Ashes, but I'm just glad that these rich qunts, with severe personality problems, are happy in their little jobs.

Mm-hm. That's probably the skill I'd choose my top bowler to have. Not Cook though. Here he goes on to say:

do these guys have girlfriends ? or are they each other's 'best friend' ?? Anderson seems to be a bit too stylish and well kept ..

What does Cook know? Ishant is more skilful than the pair of them.

Jimmeh can put irresistible spells together but he aint within a bull's roar of Steyn's ability and pace.

Happens to them all. Steyn may be faster, Anderson may be able to swing it either way, but in terms of pure skill, who can land the ball on the cut strip with hair growing out of their eyeballs?taipan wrote:Merlin wrote:Stain >>>>>>>>>>>> distance >>>>>>>>>Jimmeh.

I've clocked Anderson's wife: smash.
Or smoosh, as I'm now saying.
Re: Cook: Anderson on par with Steyn.
Well, can we start to ask the question- Is Steyn the finest fast bowler of all time, all things considered? Third best strike rate of all time (two who are better are English bowlers- Lohmann and Ferris, who bowled on uncovered pitches in the 19th century, and the third is Shane Bond, who didn't really play enough to be compared), a bowling average of 22 in an era of huge bats, roped-in boundaries, and flat pitches, and closing in on 400 test wickets.
It will always be debatable, but in an era dominated by batsmen, he has been outstanding, and statistically streets ahead of his nearest contenders.

Fair question now Trev, but as you suggest there will always be some who'd call someone else for one reason or other. That said, I really can't imagine any serious cricket fan who wouldn't have him in the top 4 or 5 all-time great quicks.

What stands out about Steyn is that he is consistently lethal on a range of surfaces. He can bowl the killer spells with hostility and is good exponent of swing. He does this with an excellent smooth run-up and has been most perdurable.
Others such as Johnson have purple patches and can lay claim at times to being the most feared bowler but have some horrible form lapses too. As has been pointed out above, Steyn has maintained a low average and has been non nonpareil in this respect in an era militating against fast bowlers for many reasons.

So he's not overrated?

Now now taips - be fair. I know Red has said that in the past, but the above says that she no longer thinks that's true ........

Anderson now has an OBE.
I think that's a significant upswing in the cycle.
