beamer wrote:Some novel ideas for tributes being posted in various places, from retiring the score of 63 in Sheffield Shield cricket so batsmen just go from 62 to 64 (that would be confusing for the scorers to say the least...) to Australia playing next week's Test with ten men.
The intention may be good but the suggestions are ridiculous. They can name the world cup after him.

It's already named after Adam Gilchrist isn't it... (qv Glossary)

He became the youngest player to score two centuries in a test against South Africa. Australia V South Africa doesn't have a trophy name.

I've had a recent family bereavement - but this was something different. This was someone young and vital, someone with the best years of his career and life ahead of him, just cruelly snuffed out by a freakish accident.

The suggestion being bandied around of a not for profit tribute match in place of the first test may be the best way out of a horrid situation and perhaps a chance for the game to move on (perhaps).

Some media outlets are still banging on about the ambulance response time. Apparently the ambulance that picked up Hughes was dispatched from Summer Hill, some 15 minutes drive away.
However, from what I can gather, even if the ambulance had been waiting on the boundary line when Hughes was hit, the moment the ball hit where it did at the velocity that it hit him with, there was very little hope for him.

Yep.
Some people need to look for someone to blame.

I read it took 6 minutes before an ambulance was called for ...and that he was given immediate CPR by the CA or CNSW Doctor
My medical experience is a first aid course ....but the first thing they tell you is to get someone to call an ambulance immediately
I dont think it would have made a difference to Hughes ...but it might to the next guy

Re: Phillip Hughes dies, aged 25
Ambulance response times only matter if the person is not being treated appropriately.
Hughes was receiving CPR and needed to be stabilized before he could be taken to the hospital anyway. That's even without mentioning that the type of injury meant Hughes was given a death sentence the moment he was hit - he effectively died at that moment.
The thing is a complete non-starter. Sometimes there is nobody to blame. Sometimes bad things just happen.

What a pity it takes a tragedy like this to bring out so many of our 'missing' members.

I think that would be the best course of action especially with another test coming up in quick time. Waiting any longer to resume would not be in anyone's interests imo.Bradman wrote:The suggestion being bandied around of a not for profit tribute match in place of the first test may be the best way out of a horrid situation and perhaps a chance for the game to move on (perhaps).

Re: Phillip Hughes dies, aged 25
Apparently around 15-20 current and former aus players, coaches, and the team doctor gathered at the SCG home dressing room last night, cracked open several beers, and laughed, cried and reminisced about a young man who's life was cut off too short, but who left a lasting impact. Hopefully it went some way towards easing their pain.

Such a tragic loss of a young, vital life. Still struggling to believe it. Nice work by Goldfinch.

Emotional statement on behalf of the team from Clarke. He broke down several times.
Cricket Australia has agreed to the team's request to retire Hughes's ODI number, 64.

Did Pup want to do that or was he put up to it? Christ, that was hard to watch.
