I hear you.
He has the ability but does he have the application?
My feeling is that he is nowhere near consistently diligent as to be reliable. Also, I think he knows he's got no-one pressuring him for his place so he can afford to be sporadically good/great.
Last test I thought he was gritting in - he left really well for a while against Jimmy and looked to be 'in the zone'. Then out of nowhere just wafted lazily at a nothing ball and got out.
And in the first innings here he looked plain awful. No composure or desire by the look of it.
Just had a look at his batting stats.
All his 6 centuries are against what I guess would be called the weaker of the bowling attacks out there (although NZ of late is certainly looking pretty strong in Boult and Southee).
2 against Bangles in Bangladesh - so easy bowling on the easiest of tracks I'd wager.
2 against India - in India. In matches where other people were getting big tons - so presumably the usual flat as a pancake pitches, turning late in the game.
2 against NZ. 1 at home in WI and the double ton you mentioned in NZ (Taylor got a double and McCullum a big ton so maybe not too bad a track?).
In his 5 years he's only played 1 seris v Aus and doesn't appear to have played SA at all at test level.
So, if he can make a big score(s) against the major attacks then we'll probably be more able to fairly assess him.

Trott's review there could explain why he's batting like a c*nt.
He's obviously going blind like Colin from The Great Escape.

Billy plays his 50/50 and gets it right.
Nice guesswork Billy.
Like a broken watch you're going to be right at least twice in a day.

They always look to go straight into the middle of Jordan's hands, unlike some other slips fieldsmen we could mention.

The commentator orgasmatron just went up a notch.
It'll be like Martin Tyler (Man City's title winning goal - 'Aggggggggggggeeeeeurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooo, splooge all over the microphone) if we win it.

Or Andy Gray's "Oooooooooooh you beauty! What a hit, son, what a hit!" when Gerrard saved Liverpool's ultimately triumphant Champions League campaign with a last minute winner...

Although a different angle showed he was looking at an attractive young woman being beaten by her boyfriend.

Beautiful ball by Broad to get rid of Samuels

Is it Belly that the stump mic keeps picking up between delivery, incessantly jabbering away?
I know England like to bore batsmen out, but a more asinine flurry of drivel you could never wish to hear.

I'm sure he repeated the quote when Sian Massey was sent flying by a (Cardiff?) player on the touchline a year or two ago as well.Dello wrote:beamer wrote:Or Andy Gray's "Oooooooooooh you beauty! I think it must be yes. Most of it was as mild as a chicken korma. I was interested in what he was saying about some chocolate covered malt honeycomb treats though. They sound delicious. I suspect that they'll never be around when you need them though

Nice... Finally treating Root as he should be, he got away with three maidens before tea, none of that shite after...

I guess they have a couple against the Aussies coming up soon, so he might want to stick around for that. He's comtributed so little in this series though, you have to wonder if he will really fancy it.

Hmmm. 83 with 6 wickets? Gonna take a top spell for England to win
Re: West Indies v England, 3rd Test, Bridgetown, 1-5 May, 2015
Beginning to shift WI way as they should knock it off before the new ball. A wicket will change it back the other way.

I can't believe England have only one slip. Bravo just squirted one through 2nd slip. I can understand a containing field to build pressure on the batsmen, but ONE SLIP FFS????
You aren't defending 292 England, it's 192. All out attack wouldn't be off the cards by most teams.
