Re: Celebrity Death List MMXVIII/The Death Thread 2018
70?? Geez, RIP.
I'll feel mega ripped off if I die at 70 (well, I won't "feel" anything but you get my drift). My old man smoked from the age of 11, was sick as a dog from age 60 to 70 after numerous smoking-induced maladies took root, refused prostate tests because he'd rather have his throat cut than risk impotence, and died at 70 riddled with metastasised prostate cancer.

For me the equation has to balance quality and quantity of life.
I have watched folk reach prodigious ages but who have little quality of life.
How much of a good thing, an average thing or lesser thing?

My youngest brother and I couldn't believe it when the old bloke actually told us that he'd rather have his throat cut than risk impotence. Sex is grouse but it doesn't compare to breathing and living a healthy life.
I would trade my prostate in a heart beat.

Aye, my Dad was a shadow of a man when he passed away peacefully in his sleep.

A good albeit premature end for Mr Skullywag Snr.
Dying peacefully is something I guess we'd all like.
Zero consolation of course but your dad seemed to have had areal crack at living life on his terms.

It sounds like poor skully senior's last 10 years were a bit shit, though ... not sure that dying in your sleep after 10 years of shitfulness is something to aspire to
From my own observations it would be better to die of 1) inoperable and disseminated lung cancer than 2) emphysema, or 3) a sudden MVA ...
1) short sentence of fairly predictable duration, during which you can tell the people who are important to you what you wish to tell them, all managed with good drugs and eminently finishable on your own terms; rather than
2) BLAM with no warning and no opportunity to prepare family etc; or
3) a long and miserable sentence of uncertain duration, punctuated by episodes of even more abject misery, eventually ending quite abruptly and (paradoxically) unexpectedly, after an unpredictable interval.
Each to their own though. It annoys me when an individual's quality of life is presumed by somebody other than that individual - whether that's a doctor, a nurse, or a family member. Ask the person whose life it is. They might be living a life that you don't (or do) see as quality, but it's not your call, it's theirs.

RIP Bevan Congdon
His stats mightn't look all that good but he was an important member of the New Zealand team through the 60s & 70s. He was outstanding in England in 1973.

Also scored one of Leeds' more famous goals in recent times against Southampton. The fourth goal after being 3-0 down.

Re: Celebrity Death List MMXVIII/The Death Thread 2018
Bevan Congdon was exactly a year younger than Bill Lawry, and would have turned 80 today.
In England in 1973 he made 176 in the second innings at Trent Bridge to put NZ within reach of running down a target of 480. A week or so later at Lords he followed up with another score around 170, both times getting dismissed in the last 15 minutes of the day. He quipped to a reporter after the Lords effort that he needed to get fitter and 'stop getting tired in the 170s'.
