The Monaco Grand Prix is always promoted as F1's glamour race, but it's always total shite.
A procession of cars too big for the tiny roads, tip-toeing around, trying to avoid the barriers.

It's how I imagine a GP series would look if it were exclusively raced by pensioners on mobility scooters.

that's every F1 race these days. so boring!

Monaco is about crashes and breakdowns, as opposed to overtaking... I’ve been saying for years, F1’s biggest problem as a spectacle is reliability, made worse by the way they penalise them with grid penalties for mechanical failures.

Anyway, Vettel takes pole in Canada, with Vercrashen avoiding the wall of champions to push Lewis down to fourth.

The usual top drivers dominate through avoiding accidents ... this time Vettel and Bottas lead Verstappen and Riccardo home, with Hamilton and Kimi rounding out the top 6.

It's almost sad to see McLaren and Williams down at the back of the grid.

Well, there’s no vacancy at Mercedes, and Vettel wouldn’t have him at Ferrari. Anything else is a downward step. Looks like an Alonso-style career move that’s going to leave him stuck in the midfield.

Who gets the Red Bull drive then? Sainz’s stock has fallen somewhat this year, is Gasly up to a promotion at this stage, will they pluck another raw youngster pretty much straight out of karting? Can’t see them recruiting a veteran, it’s not the way they do things. Although Max alongside the “old and slow” Alonso would be interesting...

Lando Norris to double the British contingent in F1 next season. He denies being named after a Star Wars character, as do his brothers Obi-Wan, Jar-Jar and Yoda.* Anyway, may the force be with him. He’ll need it, at McLaren these days.

*That last part may not necessarily be true

If Vettel doesn't come back to win the championship this year then I'll always remember him as a bottler when under pressure. He completely threw it away last year and he should already be ahead this year.

He had easily the best car for each of his world titles and quite frankly it's astonishing how close Alonso was to beating him on a few occasions with an inferior car.

He probably has the best car this year and it was 50/50 last year and he looks like he is throwing it away again.

He is definitely at best the next tier down from Alonso and Hamilton, it's a shame that history will suggest he was a better driver than Alonso when looking at their numbers.

Alonso just kept making the wrong move at the wrong time, whereas Vettel has a habit of landing on his feet, car-wise.

It will be interesting to see how Leclerc pushes him next season, he's been in a comfort zone with Kimi never really threatening him.

I think the best five of modern times (i.e. the years I'm old enough to remember!) are Senna, Schumacher, Prost, Hamilton and Alonso.

Lewis still picked up a couple of lucky points after Kimi and Joe the Nazi were penalised... Bottas’s crash may have not only put paid to his title hopes, but to his Mercedes seat for next season.

Verstappen really looks a champion in waiting, he’s matured a lot from the “Vercrashen” we saw in past years. I know he got away with one spin but on the whole handled the conditions as well as anyone. There’s a few youngsters to get excited about now, if the regulations let them race.

Anthoine Hubert, f2 driver, killed in a crash at spa today. Is the current f3 champion and had won a couple of races in f2.

Horrific crash.

Yeah, seems like he clipped another car, spun into the barrier and back into the path of another driver who basically T-boned him at 170mph, nothing he could do. Sounds like the other driver Correa is in a stable condition, no details on his injuries.

Just shows that despite the fact we think of F1 these days as this sanitised, safety conscious sport that’s no more dangerous than cricket or rugby, motorsport can never eliminate this possibility completely.

Yes, very reminiscent of the Zanardi crash. Not what you expect to happen on a F1-style track, surely changes will be made.

The F1 race itself will go ahead tomorrow, it has been confirmed.
