A fair call but Latham is clearly worse. He has failed against all ranked teams as expected.

Heading straight for the politics thread in support of Brexit gave it away (obviously he’s welcome to speak out in support of Brexit if he wants to, but preferably without all the other stuff from before). Presumably his original ID was banned. If he largely sticks to cricket it’s no problem.horace wrote:PeterCS wrote:beamer wrote:I suspect he’s Adolf Whitburn reincarnated, but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt for now...skully wrote:Welcome Ronnie.
On initial evidence, I think you may have a point.
The distinctive character of "exacerbated WUM". Almost to "agent provocateur" level.
Perhaps it's just his bro, tho.
The tone of course would be genetic given the disposition of the Shitburn lineage.

Anyway, Manics making a decent fist of this, though would still take a remarkable effort to get there.

So lovely batting here .
I mean they could get there ... still got 6 wickets in hand. But need > 2 runs per ball.

A win is a win is a win.
But the ponderous middle over stuff is a worry from the batsmen and our bowlers don't seem to have the where-with-all to tighten up the opposition bats when they are going.

Aye. Hard to see how we can keep India or England below 350.

Yeah, they look like the Finalists. Although the Sheep may have something to say about it.

Young Fernando looks like a find... SL certainly need one. The rest of their batsmen are struggling.

Angelo usually has the morning wood over the England bowlers. Will he dash the hosts' hopes again today?

If Vince is the answer, ... what's the question again?
England batting playing & missing, and 26-2.
Rocking harder than a rock salmon on crack in a rockpool, doing an Elvis impression in a diamond-encrusted suit.

Vince is a waste of space, may as well open with Root and promote Moeen/Woakes up the order. Then we could play another bowling option. The absence of Hales is telling in this scenario.

Re: World Cup 2019
So, that’s what we’ve sacrificed four years of Test cricket for. Capitulating to a fat 35-year-old semi-retired paceman. Flat-track bullies by anyone’s definition. Hope you’re proud, Lord Baelish.
Fourth semi-final place is wide open now. If England lose the remaining three then 9 points might be enough for someone, which means everyone bar Afghanistan is still in the mix.

If SL beat SA and WI, might India do a Boris Johnson and give them a bit of a helping hand in the final game, if they have the chance to cherry-pick their semi-final opponents?

Re: World Cup 2019
So (1): England batting eh? "Cometh the hour, cometh the ... hey, where's everybody gone??!!"
In truth, Root and Stokes can hold their heads up with the bat this time. The others, maybe not so much.
So (2): those tipping England as favourites - even hot favourites - still so confident?
Triumphalism is easy, gloating too, throwing brickbats is too easy as well:
The "hurler on the ditch" is always a champion - just as the backseat driver is always (always) right.
What I still find grim - grimmer than any traditional England batting collapse - is when experts [inverted commas] like Vaughan, Swann, and (as ever) Agnew, blithely talk between innings of how quickly England can knock these few runs off, great chance here for England to make a real statement & make a short day of it, etc. etc.
Point is: it got (gets) me down BEFORE England start their innings.
The arrogance & ignorance, the empty-headed attitudes of: a) glibly assumed superiority*, and then, should the team fail: b) a mahoosive switch to carping criticism. (Agnew's common recourse then is an indignant chicken clucking: "Sorry, but it's really just not good enough, I'm afraid!" - I hope he doesn't go into that mode again this time.)
Whether England subsequently go on to lose or win the day's match is not the point here.
It's the lack of grace, in victory or defeat, the lack of openness to events. It betrays a lack of (actual) expertise, too. Showing that experience does not always make wise, or insightful, or astute. If you don't have, or at some stage learn, a "centre of gravity".
Malinga showed that there's life in the old dog yet. Or the old bird, perhaps more like, whenever he has his (flamboyant) tail up.
The impact of the much less heralded offie, Da Silva, was more of a surprise.
Well played Angelo with the willow, sticking at it, and SL generally, particularly their bowlers.
...................................
The result opens up the Round Robin quite a bit. England may well now have to win two of their "Big Three" matches from here to qualify, where it would have been only 1/3. They've made it hard from themselves. ... No change there, then!
...................................
*Though Aussies (also on here) tend quite often to attribute England failures to some belated imperial arrogance, smug Englander complacency, I honestly don't think that's usually a deciding factor for the team. More often, I think, an inability to handle & negotiate fancied status, and apply themselves to doing the necessary when expected to win, especially easily. The itch of dread sets in.
But when it comes to the worst of the media commentators, yes, certainly. See above.

Re: World Cup 2019
Is it really necessary to blame the TMS commentators for everything? Brexit, Trump, climate change, the Middle East perhaps? I can only assume Aggers refused to sign your scorecard on the boundary when he was fielding at fine leg during your childhood.
It’s all about the players today and their inability to handle it when it didn’t go smoothly. And having lost to two shit teams they now have three matches of backs against the wall. Only themselves to blame. Or then again maybe it was the ghosts of Johnners, Arlott, Frindall and CMJ that made them ****** it up.
