PS for Trike, just FYI:
Mr E [Ernest] Smith, 19 years a fast bowler for Yorks:

Mr J.A. [John] Dixon, Nottinghamshire captain & England footballer (pic is from 1899):

Mr J.R. [Jack] Mason. Kent stalwart (1895, from a magazine series of the time):

And last and possibly least (sorry, Frank), the very languid-looking Mr N.F. Druce (1895, same magazine series):

Not in either of the 1895 matches! But I've no doubt in another year.
Maybe Lancs got first dibs ...

"ORFF, ORFF, ORFF!! GET THE EBSOLYUTE FLIPPIN' BOUNDER ORFF, THE RENK OUTSIDER!!!" I bet they yelled from the Pavilion.
Or something closer (in fact) to what you might hear nowadays. They weren't all that suppressed and quaint.

Re: Trivia 2020
Definitely correct on the first (is that what is called "highbrow"?) - one of the Aussies in England:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Murdoch
And everything in his facial structure, those wide-set, staring eyes and his short stature (plus his bulbous head and even his lightish hair) suggests you are right on the second, too. "The Guv'nor", decades before Alec Stewart came along.
Interesting reading (including the cracking jibe in the cartoon) here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Abel
Poor guy. No player welfare in those days. ...
Also (just because HIS biog IS up): https://www.espncricinfo.com/england/content/player/8480.html
Because cricinfo is a disaster area, here's the Wisden write-up of the second match. This time closer - ending up as a draw. Apols once again for the indistinct reproduction. You'll get the drift.
Gwynn - not Nell, another Irishman - is an interesting case, highlighted in the report. Looks like a sort of younger brother of Fry, nonetheless. The same obvious athleticism, the same show of dandyish insouciance, the same (desperate?) daredevil air, and even the same way of holding the bat for the "front-of-pavilion pose". You'll know that photo of Fry, I suppose.
So he's easy to find in the team picture. As easy to spot as Big Tom in the Players photograph.
(I forgot to mention above that the Lord's game was a run-scoring bonanza - including Grace's last Lord's century, if I read that right. Maybe the old rogue's bones were creaking by the end of the game, which would also explain his absence at the Oval.)
Signing off the questions on the two G v P games of 1895. Let me know if you'd like any more of this sort of old-fashioned punishment. But I'll give yez all a break, take one myself, and allow the more stats-based specialist to take over!

Re: Trivia 2020
Excellent. Will wait for the next one. Though I won't be able to spare too much time till the weekend.
Did a bit of searching around after this, and saw that the early "Cricket" magazines are available at the statisticians website for free.
https://archive.acscricket.com/cricket/1895/286/index.html
Interesting ads there... LJ Nicolls.
And a bit about Abel.

Re: Trivia 2020
Ah. good stuff.
And I stand corrected. I thought & said it was "Wisden". It clearly wasn't!
A neat tribute to Abel.
Raising willow, not .... Cain.
(As indicated, I can't see myself lobbing in another ancient grenade here before the weekend.)

Re: Trivia 2020
Here's one for the Search and Destroyers.
In one of the few Test matches played in 2020, Pakistan beat Bangladesh by an innings and 44 runs at Rawalpindi in February. They made 445 in their only innings. Remarkably 4 batsmen made scores of 0, 1, 2 & 3 in that all out total. Amazingly, another team made even more runs and achieved the same feat. Who and when? [Bonus; There is another game where a team scored just a few less than Pakistan and also had a 0, 1, 2 & 3]. Both matches are post 2000.
Large all out total (>400) with individual scores of 0, 1, 2 & 3:
?
Pak (445/only inns) v BD, Rawalpindi, 2019-20 - #2 Abid Ali 0; #10 Mohammad Abbas 1*; #11 Naseem Shah 2; #9 Shaheen Shah Afridi 3

I'm not going to S&D, but it looks like the sort of thing England would do.... and Pakistan keep doing.
