Re: AFL 2008 thread
Decent effort by Geelong.
I'm starting to wonder just how good Gazza junior is going to be - 5 more years like the last two and he can seriously be considered as good as Gazza senior. He will have at least one Brownlow (barring injury or suspension this year is surely already wrapped up) and a premiership or two in his trophy cabinet too.

As good as Gaz Jr is ...he's made to look ridiculously good by the "tactic" of not tackling him

Must have been a while since WC got 130 points put on them. Especially at home.

We won't come last but this is embarrassing. Really interested to know what the Perth public think of Cousins's axing now.

This may be true but i haven't seen anyone else (except James Hird) with the same ability to slip a tackle and make the most of the resulting space to place a perfect pass to the best option.
I forget who Freo put on him a few weeks ago but he cut Ablett's output by hassling him with pushes and shoves (some a tad illegal) rather than outright tackling. This would seem a better approach than standing off him as West Coast did yesterday.

Re: AFL 2008 thread
Have you forgotten Kerr or Judd who can slip out of tackles and deliver a pinpoint pass better than most?

I agree regarding Kerr and Judd and there are others too (such as Jeff Farmer and Robert Harvey) but Ablett and Hird are (were) at the top of the tree in this regard IMO.

Re: AFL 2008 thread
now now, Lardy, we won't be at the bottom too long. We are still a successful club, Five GF appearances and three Flags in 21 years is as good as it gets.
It hurts, but we will be back.

That was pretty grouse to watch, just watched the replay on Fox and it was as entertaining the second time around.

And Worsfold cracked the sh!ts when tanking was suggested!!!
That is exactly what I'd expect a tank to look like on the scoreboard. And what will happen increasingly if the Shermans' opposition twigs to their lack of effort early in a match. Too many like that on a coach's record and playing funny-buggers for first dibs on a 17-year-old kid who the 'experts' may think is slightly more likely to be the next Hird or Ablett when he's 23 (six years hence) than some other kid, will start looking like the Baldrick 'cunning plan' it actually is.

Re: AFL 2008 thread
That is how this tanking bulldust gets nipped in the bud. Make sure the losses are bloody embarrasing.
Anybody heard any more from that complete dickhead who rang up 774 after Richmond got cleaned out by Adelaide three weeks ago and started lecturing the Richmond hierarchy in his best 'Dr Karl talking to incredibly thick year 9' tone about Richmond tanking the year for the sake of one extra player? Dan L tried to shot him up but eventually he just dumped him. If you're that crap, one more gormless kid isn't going to turn you into a premiership chance next year or in five years, and 'fans' who call for it wouldn't know their arse from their elbow.

Of course it's a different story if your best midfielder hasn't played all year because of an injury ...and by not winning 5 games you can get one of the best 5 players in the game AND a promising young ruckman (when your ruck brigade competes with New Zealand Top Order Batsman for the worst breach of trades description ever)

Re: AFL 2008 thread
Of course the other possibility is that Carlton last year really were exactly what they looked like - a disorganised shower of shit that couldn't stay out of their own way.
Tank talk takes the pressure off club head honchos - I think I've mentioned this before - suddenly Carlton didn't finish last because they're crap, they finished last deliberately because it's all part of some Grand Plan and we're being really clever and putting one over those mugs at the AFL. Trust me, the cheque's in the mail. I'm from Telstra....

There is no doubt Carlton were crap last year ...but there were a few too many coincedences to absolve them completely of tanking ...the only indication I have that they weren't tanking is that Libber said he had a feeling they were
